Is anyone having issues with installing Malossi RS24 rear shocks. The part number is 4613185.

It seems with the old shocks (OEM) the lower nut would fit thru the upper mounting hole. The nut is a 13mm. The new shocks have a 17mm nut which does not fit thru the mounting hole.

This is for a 2006 GTS250

My apologies, I thought I read you were doing the front shock. So much for speed reading.

Have not received the 2nd set yet but not only is the nut larger the unthreaded portion of the Malossi is significantly longer than the OEM shock. The OEM is 1 3/16" while the Malossi is 1.5" so 5/16" longer.

They look awfully close to the same length to me. There's an optical illusion because the one isn't threaded the entire way.

The issue seems to be that the OEM ones the bottom nut would fit thru the upper mounting hole and would sandwich the body between the 2 rubber bushings to provide the upper mounting support.

With these new Malossi's the nut will not fit through the hole and therefore the body will not be sandwiched between the bushings to provide the upper mounting support.

Has anyone installed these Malossis? This design also looks different.

wbdvt,
Just received this same set and have not tried to install yet. I have a 2018 GTS 300 and will look today and see if the shocks are compatible. Based on your pictures I have a feeling it will be the same result as yours.

It will fit with omission of the first 17mm nut. As you stated, the new nut is too large for the bushing to fit over and to fit into the frame. Leave nut off, feed up through frame hole and connect down below. (is my offset correct in picture below?) Now install bushing, washer, 17mm nut and then there is room for snugging it down.

My question is: what does omitting the first nut do or not do to the set up? Dangerous? OK?

Robot has an install video with Bitubo shocks and the nut is also 17mm. He simply placed the bushing over the exposed shock post, placed washer on, threaded 17mm nut and tightened it down.

I have not tightened anything down, only finger tight but it all seems pretty solid to me.

Do I have the correct offset? Looking at rear left shock.

One nut makes it so the other nut won't back off the shock. Somewhat important.

So the two nuts are supposed to be tightened down together then, one on top of the other? If so then there is room for that.
The oem shock nuts are not stacked together instead there is the star lock washer with the nut
Would using a nylon nut be a better choice?

The issue is that while the mounting procedure is the same, there is a difference in how the shock is constructed. The nut that fits up through the body on the OEM shock is what keeps the shock together. If you take that off, you can take the spring off the shock. The Malossi shock uses a larger nut below all the mounting hardware to do the same thing. So you would put the large rubber bushing on the thick washer that fits down onto the shock, stick the shock up through the body, put the other bushing on, put on the big washer that fits on top, put on one nut, tighten it down all the way, then put on the other nut, so the first nut doesn't back off.
Five years ago, they looked like the photo of how you expected them to look, and not like the photo of the most current product on Malossi's website.

I just have to say this sometimes I feel like a nut and sometimes I don't. This is a lotta nut talk.

ok, I installed the shocks with the large washer, larger bushing, slid it thru the body mounting hole, smaller bushing, washer, nut. Tightened down as much as possible and then put the second nut on.

I looked at my other 2006 GTS 250 and the OEM shock is installed with bushing, then nut to end of thread, put up thru body hole, then bushing, washer and nut. I don't know why both 2006 scooters had that nut threaded all the way down to the non-threaded portion?

BTW - the Malossi RS24 Twins do not come with the Malossi shock adjusting tool. Fortunately I was replacing the front shock and that had a tool in the box with it.

I got caught out when I installed my RS24s. The Malossi shocks have 5 settings, and I thought there were 4 as per the originals. I set the right shock working from the top and the other from the bottom, resulting in them being set differently. Had a funny effect on the handling.

I didn't find them much different from the originals. I then put Bitubos front and back on my other GTS.
