yeah, I heard the spinny bits and the upsies-downsies stuff doesn't like it when the oil doesn't show up to work.

can't help but wonder myself if that coolant sludge was being pumped adequately by the water pump and also how well the radiators would actually work with the reduced flow from being half full of sludge.

hey now, don't you be bringing no cockamamie theories like thermodynamics into this conversation! or common sense for that matter!

It looks like an out of date sparkplug to me.

The wear on the piston and bore are where the spark has dropped down and caused erosion. I bet it was missfiring a bit before it stopped, thats where the spark drops before it can light the petrol from the exhaust.

The erosion has been caused by the liner rubbing up against the rings and the pistons skirt to the point where the aluminium has been dragged off the bottom.

Two very hot surfaces rubbing against without enough lubrication has done that, not gasses or E10 fuel.

∆∆∆∆∆∆ This.

About years ago I asked the same question to the forum. Is 10% alcohol gasoline/petrol going to hurt my engine? The consensus was that I shouldn't worry about it. So I find your claim, convictions, and what you're trying to postulate unsubstantiated.

Using E10 in a vehicle designed for E5 may rot some of your fuel lines and rubbers but it's not going to ruin a piston crown or skirt.

A lot is blamed on Ethanol in gas that shouldn't be. Yamaha has been using ethanol resistant lines since 1984. Many people are getting vehicles with a carburetor for the first time in their life, or at least recent memory. And in the US and Canada, most of those vehicles sit for months during the winter, without any steps made to winterize the fuel system. If the internet and this forum were around in 1980, you would still have people complaining about fuel system problems with bikes that sat up over the winter. And it would probably be blamed then on unleaded gas, because you couldn't buy Ethyl anymore and the spout wouldn't fit in your tank, even if you could. And everyone knows that removing lead from gas destroys top ends.

Was the advice "won't do anything bad inside your engine but a small chance it may eat through a fuel line resulting in a fireball"?

It was a little high brow. Dumb it down next time eh.

Actually we haven't heard from the OP for a while.

I'm wondering what the outcome was ?

Clues anyone ?

*peers into crystal ball*

It appears a new cylinder kit was at least part of the outcome…

I have never had anything but carbureted vehicles, and never will. I learned as a teenager that you don't leave fuel in a carburetor for very long. But I have replaced a lot of in tank electric fuel pumps on EFI cars and trucks that were left sitting for a long time with ethanol gas in the tank. I have also seen injectors badly corroded on vehicles where ethanol gas was left in them for a long time. Newer vehicle fuel systems may be more resistant to ethanol if used in a normal manner, but they can still be damaged if you just let them sit there for months/years with ethanol gas in them.
