I was all ready to install a 12V outlet in prep for my 2000 mile plus tour in May. Then I removed the left knee pad where it was going to go. Imagine my surprise when there was no easy access like in the old days! There are two 'scored panels' in an otherwise solid extension of the leg shield behind there. I removed the panels with the aid of a hacksaw blade but found that the alarm wires are also missing. And there are lots of interesting gizmos back there now! It looks like the best bet is to run the wires down behind the leg shield to the battery (not a simple chore but the best solution?)

Anyone out there done this 'mod' and have any suggestions?

What do you want to run from the 12v outlet?

Should the outlet be switched via the ignition (current only when the engine is running)?

Behind the fuse box in the glove compartment is the connection for the USB socket, which is connected with a Superseal plug. There you could hang a suitable Superseal Y-adapter in between.

You should connect it to the wires that power the usb-outlet in the glovebox. You can easily source the required connectors on Ali or just solder into the wires.

I did just what you are talking about. I ran a wire through the leg shield to the battery compartment. I used a 2' long zip tie to fish the wire through.

Installed a 12v socket in the knee pad. The socket is hot wired to the battery. I primarily use this as a source for a battery tender cigarette type plug.

the hpe does have the alarm connector but it maybe tucked out of the way and may need partial glovebox removal to reach it. mine does.

the supply to the usb socket is 12v and switched by ignition and uses a plug if you reach in though that hole and fish around. Suggest making a short wire with matching plug/socket an a y-split to feed your 12v outlet - assuming it's not crazy high current else could be too much for the fuse on that circuit. common things like phone/gps charging is fine for this but don't expect to plug a portable toaster oven in

All good suggestions. I want the 12v outlet up where I can plug in my Garmin GPS. The USB in the glove box is fine for charging a phone while riding but I don't want wires coming out of it while in motion. I'll fish around in the 'black hole' and see what I can come up with. It would be nice to have power switched but not necessary and I'll probably just run a fish of some kind down behind the leg shield and pull the wires through as bluside suggested. I'm sorry they felt the need to 'close up' things behind the knee pad. I used to reach in through mine on the 2010 to open the glove box (after I got it back from being stolen and the release would no longer work.)

You usually want a GPS to be on even with the ignition off, as you'd remove it completely if you walked away from the scoot, and you usually want to set it up before moving off. IYSWIM...

Plus it makes a handy connector for battery charging, voltage testing etc.

So fish a wire through to the battery, but please connect it via an inline fuse!

If you just want to drive the GPS buy just the adapter plug from Scooterwest and run a Garmin GPS USB cable from the adapter up to through the mirror stem to the GPS mount.

Just because the GPS doesn't charge (and drain the battery) when the ignition is off, doesn't mean it won't keep running....

True. That usually depends on whether the unit is switched on before being attached, or gets switched on by external power being supplied. When power is removed, in the former case it should stay on, in the latter it should go off.

When mine loses external power it give me the option to cancel shut down and just use internal battery on the GPS.

So today the temps were in low 60's for the first time since....I don't remember. I decided to fish the wires through to the battery (thanks for all the other suggestions but there is no room behind the shield through the little hole to access any connectors, at least not for me). Easier said than done. I ended up removing the two in-board floor 'rubbers' and fishing the wires to there, then with the help of some 12" wire ties, over to the battery. It required the use of a pair of forceps (very handy tool) and a needle-nose pliers plus some industrial strength duct tape. But it is done and I now have a 12V outlet, live all the time, in my left knee pad. Should I want USB, I'll just plug in an adapter. I haven't decided where to mount the GPS (I've attached a RAM mount to the mirror stalk in the past and it worked but......)
