amateriat wrote: As things stand now (ahem), I'm looking at roughly a bit under six weeks of rehab, although it's an open question of how long I'll be where I am now and how much of that time might be spent at home. The next stage involves a second (presumably final) surgical procedure involving a bone graft from my right (mostly-unmolested) leg. There will, of course, be necessary rehab after this, but it shouldn't be quite so long. One positive factor is that both wrists should out of their casts by then; right now, dealing with a walker is a bit of a challenge without help. (Of course, the fact that I am dealing with a walker less than two weeks post-crash is quite a thing to me.) Speaking of PT: Today was kind of a biggie: pivoted out of bed, changed out of hospital gown to my regular sleep/lounge-wear for the first time, hopping on the walker to high-back wheelchair, rolled out to hallway (first time since i got here), get back on walker to hop forward ten "steps", drop back into wheelchair and wheeled bak to my room, sit for another hour, then back to bed. And this suddenly reminded me of a song, with a music video so appropriate it hurts when I laugh… Thanks for your reply it made my day. It looks like you are making a lot of progress considering the circumstances. After my first week in impatient rehab I had hallway privileges which meant that I could roam the hallways unattended. I was always trying to steal some cookies from the nursing station.

This could have been me many times over. The closest that I came involved a distracted driver that made a left right in front of me. I went into an uncontrolled skid then dropped a few feet from the car. ABS probably would have kept me upright.
NJ is not alone in terms of being home to distracted drivers but in my experience the western half of the state is much safer beyond route 206. The eastern half closer to NYC is a different animal. 90% of all of my close calls have been within a few miles of my house. I've been on the fence about selling my Triumph. Reading this thread may have tipped the scales a bit. Can't bring myself to ditch the GTS but I need to keep it pointing west. Good luck with the recovery and don't let the opinions here shape whether or not you get back on the horse. Peace w.

I managed to completely miss this thread. Oof. Here's to healing, to getting back to where you want to be, and to all the little victories that mark progress on the road to recovery.
"That which doesn't kill us..." ...Makes us really weird. Don't try to do wheelies in the hospital wheelchair. For -SOME- strange reason, nurses and doctors frown on it and try to flag you with a "fall risk" penalty. (AMHIK)

Amateriat, my very, very best wishes for your recovery. Here's hoping that it goes according to the plan.
I am nearly never here anymore. My Vespa days are done. I have been truly blessed never to have had a serious incident like yours. I only found out about this because I still follow Steve William's Scooter in the Sticks blog and I saw a post of yours there. I have shifted my life on two wheels to a Brompton folding bicycle where I am racking up kilometres at a much slower yet deeply satisfying pace. My Vespas changed my life for the better in ways I had no way of anticipating when I started my scoot commute way back in 2010. My Vespa adventures led me to people all over (many of whom are here) who are amazing and whom I would never otherwise have met. I believe your experience is similar. My wife and I were touring a winery cave last October in the Loire on bicycles. My wife managed to lose control (at a low speed thank heavens) but the crash fractured her collar bone. Physiotherapy continues. She is about 95% recovered now, but for many months I was her right-hand man (literally). That was trivial compared to what I believe I have learned today about the situation you find yourself in. I think that the moral to these stories is that there is always risk. It's unavoidable. A few days ago a 16-year-old boy was sitting quietly on a subway bench here in Toronto. An older male rambled up to him and stabbed him multiple times. He lost his life. That assailant had mental health issues. There was absolutely nothing that victim did to cause him to suffer that fate. There is only one path. We need to keep moving, and we need to keep exploring. I have no regrets. None whatsoever. It sounds to me that you have none either. That's the way to go. Take good care, and keep your eye on the horizon. May excellent adventures come your way.
