The engine won't kick over when pulling on the right brake lever, but will when pulling on the left.
I'm worried that if the left lever suddenly quit, I'd really be stuck.

Some additional diagnostic info might help narrow down the issue.
Are there other symptoms with the brake leaver? Are any other systems affected by the brake being engaged or idled? Brake lights light up when the brake leaver is engaged? Do the brake calipers engage and the bike does not role / move when the brake is on? Any recent rough weather, muddy roads, or other recent source of corrosion? This is the parts diagram for the 2009 MP3 500ie. It indicates as "stop button" (parts 11) which appears to be the part that would engage with the brake. It might be worth removing the plastic covering the steering tiller to expose those connections for inspection for damage. https://www.parts-piaggio.com/piaggio-scooters/500-PIAGGIO-SCOOTER/MP3/2009/MP3-500/Electrical-system/Selectors--Switches--Buttons/1209/42/20072/2687 |

For goodness sake, just replace the RHS brake switch. Very cheap and easy to do. Keep a spare handy too, these switches get a lot of use and can fail.

Thanks for the various suggestions, and yes the lights do come on and the brakes do tighten up on the calipers.
I like the jimC suggestion of replacing the switch, however I must confess to suffering a complete fear of anything electrical. So could someone point me in the direction of where the switch is located. Thanks again for all your input. |

The brake lever operates the switch directly. Just uncover the rear of the brake lever, unclip the wires from the switch, unscrew the old switch and screw in a new one. Reconnect the wires. Button up, ride off.

As Jim says the switch is easy to replace, just be gentle with it cuz it is plastic.
