There's a bill coming up in our state legislature that would allow lane splitting, I want to encourage all the Tennessee guys to contact their congressmen and urge them to vote yes on this bill! If you don't know your congressman, go to Tennessee.gov and you should be able to find which one represents you and get his email address. This is our chance guys. Guys, let's swing into action!

You will thank me later!

This makes it clear we could do both split and filter.
HB 1454 by *Faison
Traffic Safety - As introduced, authorizes two-wheeled motorcycles to be operated between rows of stopped or moving vehicles in the same lane on certain limited access highways and interstate highways when the speed of traffic is 25 miles per hour or less.

I'm all for it, but I don't see our legislature passing it. Logic isn't their strong suite.

Let's stay off of the subject of helmet laws, please. It never ends well, and is explicitly called out in the Posting Guidelines as being off-limits.

As a guy who's lived in California for over 20 years, lane splitting should just 100% be perfectly legal in all 50 states. Period. If you know how to intelligently operate a motorcycle, I believe it actually improves safety, congestion, and efficiency.

I was traveling through Florida last year and it was painful to watch bikes just sitting in traffic, when they could easily and safely split lanes. I mean really, if we can do it in CA- with all the crazy drivers and traffic- and have been for decades- other states need to follow suit.

CA has a LOT of dumb laws but they got it right on this one!

A bill was introduced in Virginia and it was tabled in committee. So didn't even make it anywhere. They just don't understand is the problem.
If you haven't done it you don't understand. I do it anyway. If I get pulled over I plead ignorance and hope to just get a warning ticket, which is only on record for 90 days unless the offense is repeated in that time, well repeated and caught 😁😁🛵🛵🛵🛵

What I interpret from the first stages of the proposal is:

It is only allowed on Interstates and multilane divided highways where the speed limit is above 50 mph. The traffic is flowing less than 25 mph.
And the the rider cannot filter thru the traffic faster than 10 mph above the slowed cars.

So I dont see the bill helping urban city traffic jams, only major highways. Maybe they will add all roads that are multilane 1 direction, then it could really benefit all bikes.

While on the scooter I stay away from the big roads. I leave that for my Goldwing.

If any sense is involved, that would be a good approach to introducing lane splitting/sharing/filtering to a new area: a bit at a time on different classes of road.

I saw many videos of police using filtering(not U.S.) to catch people behind the wheel with their phones in their hands.
I say that's the best argue point to a politician that's probably never ridden a PTW.

Filtering is where it's needed most. Sucks missing a green light because you're stuck behind 3 cars that don't even get to the speed limit till it's time to brake for the next light change.

If it does get passed, will riders of city traffic filter those streets too ? Absolutely- why not. I fully agree thats where it needs it most. I already zip thru downtown gridlock when i can. I do it cautiously without pissing drivers off.

I have only 1 route for me to get to the big city of Nashvegas. It involves 36 red lights. I dispise it during rush hour. 16 miles = 2 hours. Nonrush hour less than 30 min.

It's technically filtering, not splitting here. It went into law around the end of September and the timing was essentially crap. I saw a few news stories and saw a few billboards announcing the upcoming change, but it really failed to account for all the snowbirds that arrive in late October / early November. As a result, our seasonal residents didn't get the memo and have been a bit salty about it.

I haven't had too many opportunities to filter and it hasn't bothered me much. When the snowbirds get a whiff of heat and fly home, there will be plenty of time for practice.

Arizona did little to spread word of the new law, but most riders couldn't wait (some didn't). I've filtered a couple of times when riding solo without issue. Usually, I'm in a group of 5+, and filtering isn't viable. When the temps start climbing into the hundreds, filtering will be a huge blessing!

The OP mentions that Tennessee is considering a splitting bill. I'm confused. Is it a lane splitting bill or a lane filtering bill.
We have had lane filtering in Utah the last 4 years.

Must be operating a motorcycle
Traveling on a roadway with two or more lanes in the same direction
Speed limit on the roadway must be 45 miles per hour or less
The vehicle(s) being overtaken by the motorcycle must be stopped
The motorcycle must be traveling at a speed of 15 miles per hour or less
The movement may be made safely

I'd love to be able to lane filter here in TN where the roads are wide enough to allow it. It'll be fun for the Karens too, giving them something new to rant/rave about in traffic.

One of the upsides of lane splitting that isn't mentioned, is that in places that have lane splitting, there are more people riding motorcycles. That frees up parking spaces in urban areas. Car drivers benefit from less cars on the road, so their commutes speed up.
