"For a long time, protective gear was marketed for protecting the upper body and head. And for good reason, of course. Vital organs and the brain might be more important than, say, your femur, in the grand scheme of things. But that doesn't mean that a broken leg — or worse — shouldn't be mitigated when possible."

"The airbags inflate automatically using a key connected to the motorcycle that is engaged during a crash"

like the ones on some (most?) inflating jackets and neck collars?

fun but ...

so if you're still partially on the bike then not likely to help unless you have the connecting cord pretty tight. and how many times are you likely to accidentally go to hop off the bike and forget?

On at least one inflatable crash jacket, inflation is triggered by a fall detector which is much more sensible than connecting a cord to your bike IMO.

I hope that, at minimum, that cord is "disc brake lock" orange/yellow. Otherwise, maybe even in spite of...

Obligatory FortNines

Your legs are more susceptible to injury than your chest:
Pull cord airbags are effective and unlikely to trigger accidentally:
To SteelBytes' point, on a lowside where you're still sitting on the bike, the pullcord won't trigger. I suspect they'd still need armor and kevlar to be effective riding jeans. Sounds like more of a concept product than something to go buy.

Ryan's videos have always been crazy-informative, not to mention funny.

Bottom-line is that everything we do in the realm of safety is to minimize potential injury; nothing is foolproof. For a hot minute I pondered how guys in cut-offs and muscle-tees can scream around on their literbikes du jour at supra-legal speeds while someone like me does all the seemingly Right Stuff and still gets smacked upside the head (with a few broken bones on the side). The answer is understanding that the gear is not a cloak of invincibility, but it's still damned important to use it. And that Literbike Lad may likely have his unfortunate moment when and where he least expects it.

A fall detector system is also more expensive to manufacture and that gets passed on to the consumer.

Considering air bag equipment is already out of budget for many riders, I'm really glad manufacturers are providing us with the more affordable, cord-activated option.

And the other advantage to the corded airbag systems is that you don't have to worry about a battery going flat.

Wonder what it would cost to replace the airbag when you forget and hop off to get something from under the seat or quick gas stop?

If the manufacturer is clever, it's just a CO2 cartridge to replace after you deflate it by hand.

If they really clever, you need to send it back for repacking and arming. $$$

I didn't even think about that. Apparently you're only getting 8 hours of life from the battery packs. Fine for commuting, but on touring duty, that's 0.5 days to 2 days depending on if you're Bill or me.

At which point I'd be plugging my jacket into my bike to charge it while I ride... so basically back on a corded system again anyway lol

I don't recall exactly how the corded/tethered inflatable vests work but I think the cord simply pulls a valve open which causes the CO2 canister to fill the vest. No power needed. But I don't know what happens when you get off the bike and forget to disconnect the cord. More research is needed by someone interested in these product (I'm personally not). They do sell a number of them on Cycle Gear. Prices range from $400 to $1500.

Yup. With all the camera gear, wireless mics, and other tech I travel with, I'm going to need to start traveling with an 8-outlet travel bar if I have one more thing to charge every night lol

I use a 4 plug 100w charger. Plus in one charging Matt that does the iPhone, watch and AirPods. One usbc cable for iPad Pro, one micro use for camera battery charger, another for Sena headset covers my basics. If I need more then I'll take a 6 plug. My current one is also a battery pack if I need to top up something without plugging into the bike. Garmin XT when I use it is hard wired so I don't need to charge it at night.

When it is cold I use an external battery pack to power heated vest if I were interested in something like the inflatable pants that would be my choice rather than tether to the scoot.

Back to the gear, why not just inflate the gear before mounting the scooter.

Then no problem with the cord or battery or co2 cartridges.

Sure, you might look like the Michelin Man, but you would be safer.

Maybe.
