Alive, and…hopping.
I have another four days in rehab in Wall, NJ, then I'll be home while my surgeon sorts out when I come back in for bone-graft surgery (borrow a bit from my left leg to get the right one properly redone). Then it's sorta deja-vu-all-over-again, just on a shorter timeline. I should be walking slowly by early Summer, faster before Fall. Given all that's happened, I'm relatively lucky. I have my helmet with me, and I take pains to point out to anyone who asks "what the hell happened?", that as badly banged-up as I'd gotten (1) everything will heal, and (2) I have All That Gear to thanks for not having suffered worse; I still have a functioning jaw on account of the helmet, as one example. My main job now is simply to get back to some reasonable semblance of normal. My surgeons insist this will be the case, but I'm not taking anything for granted. And, yes, I want to ride again, but in due time: I'm not anticipating being properly back on the road till early next year (conservatively)…no sense in securing a ride late in the year only to have it laying idle for several more months. And: Thanks to everyone for checking in. It's been a hell of a boost to me. ![]() Still Checking In: Along with catching up with mountains of e-mail and vegging-out on YouTube.

amateriat, How's Ms amateriat handling all this?
That helmet did its job. You'd be much worse off if you'd been wearing a half helmet or an open face helmet. IIRC, the chin is the most common head injury (might be wrong by not by much). Were you wearing gloves? What kind and what protection did they offer. Why'd your hands get so injured. Is there anything you might have done in hindsight to protect them better? Sending good mojo your way. Miguel |

Miguel Gloves were middleweight Alpinestars short-cuffs, which did yeoman work for everything forward of my wrists; the bulk of the damage occurred on initial impact with that Jeep, I think. Alternative evasive action? Given that I had roughly less than twenty feet to do much of anything, I don't think there was much else to do.

So pleased to see your reply. Glad to hear you are on the mend, even if that's slowly. Looks like You Tube is your friend. Just stay away from those nasty rabbit holes that some people find.
Heal well my friend.

Glad to hear about your progress.
I try and avoid thinking about what could happen while riding cuz if I go down that road I will stop riding altogether. Question for you is, how can we fellow members of this forum be of help to you. Let us know when you are back home and in rehab as the weather warms up, maybe some of us might make a trip out to see you and have a beer with you, and take in the jersey shores as well ...

Just chiming in to add my voice to the chorus of well wishers.
Very glad to read your post that the surgeons and you are confident about getting back to normal. Good for you! |

Do you think in hind site you would have been better served if you were wearing another type of glove like a glove with better finger protection or gauntlet gloves or.... Thanks. Keep moving forward! amateriat wrote: Thanks again, Miguel. Nope, I doubt a change in gloves would've saved my wrists from the hit they took; maybe if I'd been kitted-out MotoGP-style I might've suffered slightly less, but those guys have oodles of running room to slide and tumble before hitting anything (other than their own bike or another rider).
