I've been contemplating purchasing this milk crate then attaching it to the metal rack (which comes included with the largest packir bag 20" L x 20" W x 20" H) which would then also be attached securely to the oem piaggio rear rack for the gts https://www.uline.com/Product/Detail/H-7830/Bulk-Containers/Collapsible-Bulk-Container-48-x-45-x-25-1500-lb-Capacity?pricode=WA9112&gadtype=pla&id=H-7830&gclid=Cj0KCQjwlPWgBhDHARIsAH2xdNeeyamUd8Vyj7O5aIvQwGMC8yZ6YBZx7gNPuPZCIH35qIdbw5i6hYkaAjNfEALw_wcB

I know it's a really big milk crate but I never done instacart before and would hate to not be able to fit an entire order(s) if I start taking orders on there. I know it will probably significantly effect my handling (especially when loaded up) and I have ordered some weighted bar ends for my gts for that reason so hopefully that would help me out but does anyone on here have any helpful tips that I should be aware of before I try to do this?

PS I might try to do this on my Vespa sprint first since I already have the rear rack installed on there but then I would have to take the top case which is screwed onto it off, so maybe not, we'll see.

Basically I'm trying to do instacart as a second job to work on my own time and I want to be 100% prepared for it. Also a problem I do have is I'm not sure what hardware I should use to attach the milk crate to the metal rack yet so any good suggestions would be helpful! I need something super secure!

Nice is that custom made?

Btw I just noticed the price for that milk crate that I posted and will probably have to size down there no way I'm paying $375 for 1 crate lmao ;_;

that's my guess.

I also just noticed that they've got a spare tire under the front rack

Without getting into the price of the crate, it's four feet wide.
Cut 45 inches off a 4 x 8 sheet of plywood, and attach it to the back of your Vespa somehow. Now, try to ride around with it.
Even though it's not two feet high, you'll get the idea.
You can't find bar end weights heavy enough to fix the problems you will have if you load that thing up.

Ideally, you can use something about three feet by two feet, if you put some of the weight where the passenger would sit. This causes issues with putting in gas, though.
A front rack would be useful for carrying beverages. I would recommend the FACO rack instead of the Piaggio one, because it will hold a lot more weight. If you get a good flat rear rack for the Vespa, there are a lot of aftermarket ones that are stronger than the ones Piaggio now sells.

Can you link me to the better rear racks? And will they fit a 2023 Gts?

Front Rack. If you look at it, you can tell that the weight is supported on the front of the frame. You can overload it a lot. The Piaggio rack bolts to the front of the bike and will likely come off if you overload it or hit a bump too hard.

https://scooterpartsco.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=801_4181_4187&products_id=37445

Here's the FA Italia rear rack. The neat thing about the aftermarket racks for what you're doing is that you can cut and weld them to your heart's content for a lot less than the Piaggio rack.
https://scooterpartsco.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=801_802&products_id=3899
I don't have the flat FACO rear rack, but it's also a beast.

I don't know where or how you can find one here, maybe at a restaurant, but one of the most popular boxes I saw in BsAs for food delivery was the massive styrofoam boxes that fish farms use to ship salmon.

Most scooters used by delivery riders here have the "milk crate" or load centred over the pillion seat as in the picture of the large rack above.
You don't want it hanging to far back.

You spent nearly $8K for that scooter with beautiful aesthetics. Somehow a plastic milk crate (regardless the cost) doesn't seem like an appropriate add-on. Miguel

That is a pallet sized container, can hold 1,500 lbs and could be picked up by a fork lift. Not a milk crate.

No Way.. As Giallo said, it is a pallet sized crate.
Just remember it isn't going to be the size of the crate that you mount, it is the weight you can load onto the rack. If it is a standard Vesp rack, then you wont be able to put a lot of weight on it. It will hold it when you place 50lbs on it, but while riding and going over bumps the rack frame is likely to crack.
If I remember correctly the rack on my Vespa for the rear is rated for 12-15lbs and the front one is rated for 6-8lbs.
I have placed 50 lbs on the rear rack and moved it a few miles but I wouldn't risk it for sustained use, and carrying other peoples cargo I'd want to it to be a heavy duty rack. The mounting points would need to be reinforced as well to sustain heavy loads on a regular basis.
I am not sure if instacart allows you to choose which orders you take or not, but if it did, then you could choose those that are going to be lighter and can be carried ona. regular sized milk crate and weigh less than 20lbs.
You can also put stuff in bags and hang it in the front between your feet.

That's an enormous crate. A regular milk crate like the kind college students buy for dorm rooms along with a net cover would allow you to pile in some groceries.

I can haul 6 to 8 bags of groceries on my GTS. A couple in my top case, a couple strapped behind me on the seat, one on the purse hook, one or two strapped to the floor board mount, and a couple on the front rack. That should suffice for a lot of Instacart stuff. Maybe.

I just feel this idea is about as desirable as fitting a roof rack to a Ferrari
in order to carry plywood boards and timber from Home Depot. Facepalm emoticon

Post-Covid, most of our major grocery chains have started fleets of independent contractor delivery riders with Asian 125 motorcycles fitted with branded load boxes. I suggest you rather do the same and lease or buy a consumable cycle better suited to delivering groceries. I believe you would even be able to claim costs from income for tax purposes.

The more I am reading your guys replies and then after I re-read my own original post, the more I realize how totally unrealistic and very sketchy this whole idea was in the first place! Thanks for the good laugh. I haven't lol'd like that in a while. 🤣😂:3

I was actually seriously considering this before I found out that the rear rack maxes out at only 15lbs I will see if the app lets me see how big the order is before I take it so I can only choose the smaller orders

Scooter delivery 200+ review.

My carrier is a cooler for milk crates. O.D. 16" cube. I.D. 13 3/4" cube.
I can't deliver pizzas or a dozen doughnuts. I can only carry one 12 pack of soda. I have a small cooler that fits 2 fountain drinks and my max is 6 drinks.
Drinks must be carried on the floorboard because the back of the bike shakes/bounces too much.
I'm making changes to carry pizza but I'm Dashing in 35 min. so can't post more.

I know this is somewhat unsolicited advice, but, to the OP, have you considered sticking with DoorDash, UberEats, PostMates, etc? Seems those types of orders are more suited for hauling in a Vespa.

I don't know if there is a big difference in potential income but I would imagine that although the tips may be higher with Instacart, per order, you could make more deliveries/hour with DoorDash et al and given the low cost of fuel on the Vespa may still be ahead compared with Instacart. Plus, think of the cost of the modifications needed to accommodate large groceries orders. Just my 2¢

If you figure out what it will really cost to run a delivery service off the back of a 2023 Vespa GTS, you will realize that it's cheaper to do in a small car.

It cost me $5 in gas to make $100. A fellow Dasher in a crossover(car/SUV?) tells me it takes about $20 to make $100.
If I were to deliver during peak(dark or rain)times and downtown, I have no doubt I would easly make $35 an hour. Ain't gonna do me any good if the thing I don't like to talk/think about happens.

There have been a number of threads thru the years that compare the cost/mile of a Vespa to the cost per mile of a car. I don't recall the numbers but IIRC, it was the cost of tires that dominated the cost per mile on a Vespa. Gas, insurance & registration fees, are relatively insignificant. You can save big if you maintain your vespa yourself which is pretty easy for the most part.

Try the Search function to see what you find.

From my experience, these two are the most significant. I have 25/50/25 full coverage on my red SH. It cost less than $350 a year. My van is $1,600 a year.

The DD part might be a problem but Florida doesn't require Insurance for PTW's. This is also why I Dash during the safest although lowest earning time of the day.
I also think that changing both vehicles to commercial insurance would still be a significant difference between them.

Add drive belts at 6K miles for an HPE.
And if you do all the work yourself, a lot of things are cheaper, but not everyone buys a vehicle so they can learn to work on it.

Just my 2¢
Uber bought out postmates so now there is no driver app for postmates also I had an Uber eats account but got into an at fault accident while delivering with them so they have my account suspended until further notice. Also door dash would be perfect for me but currently they are not supporting deliveries by scooters in my area only cars smh my luck.

Maybe set it up to carry 6 pizzas. Are there any pizza joints hurting for drivers?

If you are going to do pizza deliveries on a scooter, before you buy anything, measure the size of the largest pizza boxes the company uses. We found these great pizza carrying systems in Spain about ten years ago, and wanted to import them. We got a sample and found out that the largest pizza box used in Spain was about four inches smaller than the largest Pizza boxes used in the US.
