My friend Andy (andyheckathorne here) posted a short video last night of a ride he did here in Central Pennsylvania. I thought it perfectly depicted the twisty roads we have here and the general fun you can have riding a GTS.

I think he must have been riding off a cliff to get that 88mph reading but it's a cool video anyway. Sadly, my friend Paul and I were riding at the same time on the same day and forgot to invite him. I claim a senior moment was in play.

Here's the video. It's worth the 2 minutes and 15 seconds.

I'm always impressed by people that can make these kinds of videos. Very well done.

Looks like a great ride. Thanks for posting.

"Chesh, you just got a new bike. You cannot get a new GTS, too." That brought up some serious nostalgia (in a good way). Thanks for sharing!

88mph...could be from riding the wake of a van, box truck, or semi? I sometimes do that to get an assist up a steep hill or when I'm getting nervous about running out of fuel.

Very, very nice. Maybe that 88 was "indicated" (did that a few times on Melody), so hardly impossible, though I'd be loath to try that on the average bit of two-lane.

re 88mph (142kph):

iirc the early GTS didn't have a limiter (might have been only some countries?) so although the 88 is exaggerated by the stupid Speedo at around 10% they were probably doing approx 80 (130kph) GPS which is still faster than the limiter in modern GTS which is 75 (120kph) on the speedo

PS, we don't need to go into discussing the kubler tone wheels, plenty of that in other threads

That reminds me: didn't they do away with the limiter on the '23 GTS?

so the internet claims for what that's actually worth. Concrete proof would be nice instead of one person got it on a downhill and then everyone repeated the story.

I bet piaggio kept the rpm limit at 9k which would result in it still being effectively limited at probably 85mph speedo instead of 80mph.

note: depending on the situation I sometimes hit 130kph speedo at 8700rpm and some times I hit 9000rpm at 127kph. so a singular test won't prove much.

for the pedants: all numbers in this comment and my previous are rounded for clarity so you don't need posts like I got 82 instead of 80 etc.

They must have.

Cdwise rode her new 2023 GTS 300 from Knoxville to Jacksonville last week as a Cannonball training run.

On the way she hit a GPS 88 mph.

That is now one fast scooter.

Which assuming it's the same engine and cvt etc as the previous gts (as has been claimed virtually everywhere) then doing basic maths this would have to be about 10k rpm ...

(Assuming of course that it wasn't some combination of downhill + tail wind + drafting behind a big vehicle + ...)

I can't see why Vespa would have a speed limiter on a 24 hp machine...unless it's an rpm limiter, which I could understand. Sort of.

My GTS300 has an effective built-in speed limiter in the form of 'not enough power to go any faster' anyway.

Razz emoticon

I haven't watched the video yet, but will, later on.

I would be certain that 88 mph was achieved in those conditions.

I didn't ask what she was running alone in neutral conditions.

Rev limiter, definitely. Seems most vehicles have one these days, which I'm all for...or, as I think of it, AES: anti-exploding engine system.

I've bounced off the rev limiter a few times on the GTS, always on the interstate, usually in someone's slipstream. It never fails to remind me of the scene in Hunt For the Red October where they dive until the sub pops a rivet...limit found!

This is the recording Bill mention by GPS using the Scenic app on 2023 GTS Super Sport. I didn't record video though I tried with the new Sena10c Evo but user error made what was captured useless. I did not hit the rev limiter and the scoot has about 2,100 miles on it. Previous Vespa GTSs I've owned didn't get max mph until 3,000 plus miles. Note, gas mileage sucks at that speed.
Speedo indicated a but over 90.

I just confirmed the part numbers for the cvt (drive pulley, driven pulley, belt, etc) and for the final reduction drive are the same with pre-2023 and 2023. So ratio of rpm to rear wheel is gonna be the same.

So for cdwise to get that speed it would have to be 10k rpm. Hmmm ...

I'm rather surprised that this is implying piaggio now allows 10k ...

Relive is an iPhone App and I'm sure Android. Even in the free version it takes no skill to make those videos. Any picture you take on the ride is inserted into the video. Of course there's a paid version with extra features.

I've used it for cycling and my wife uses it often for Kayaking. as evidenced below.

I wish. I have not got the app to connect and even the phone rarely connects. Wish the iOS app worked better.

Scenic app will insert photos taken with the app but I had the phone in a quadlock Mount and I wasn't about to remove it from the Mount for photos at that speed. When I stopped on the cannonball route the pics showed up.

The Scenic app works well every time as long as I start it. But to take pictures that show more than a blurry through the screen photo I need to take it off the mount.

on the topic of creating videos of rides ...

Something I've been meaning to do is write some code for overlaying data such as a speedo and rpm using the data recorded using my app on to a video recorded with a camera such as a gopro.

The only reason I haven't done this yet is I'm a bit lazy about making a ui to be able to adjust the time sync. I wrote some suitable video processing code a couple of years ago that would be suitable.

I'd say common is to just stop every once in a while and take a shot.

And sometimes I do just that but I was riding interstates to avoid weather and still make it in before dinner.

I also thought I was recording with the Sena 10c Evo. User error left me with nothing worh sharing as it is a new device for me.

Good thing I'm resilient. Otherwise I might miss the warm weather to ride! It's ok to cry while you ride right??
