Modern Vespa

A question for you veteran scoot-ers; while decelerating, with or without brakes, is the engine speed supposed to drop to idle and the trans disconnects, so that you are basically coasting? Or, is it supposed to stay engaged so that you are using the engine to brake? This little gem is new to me and I am not sure how it is supposed to function. If I let go the brakes and just head down a hill without throttle, it freewheels, if I use throttle to get going first it stays engaged longer but eventually free wheels.
Is my vario-thingy or clutch needing replacement? Working normally? Anything else you could offer?

Where does everybody get parts? Most of the sites are out of stock or stupidly expensive. Amazon has a lot of Chinese stuff but I'd prefer European. The SIP shop in Germany seems really good but shipping is breathtaking. Any ideas? I'd prefer Canada but N.A. might have to do.

I was having fun with this because I hate the way ABC (Australia) News have this habit of using the name of some obscure country town in their news articles with no reference to which state or region it is in. It just frustrates me 'cause I can be stuffed googling so many place name I see every day.

Back to the original question, it depends on your speed. The clutch is a centrifugal clutch, and only disengages when you are going very slowly, so you can get a lot of compression braking when slowing down before you start freewheeling.

I use compression braking all the time, and mostly use my brakes for stopping, emergencies and slowing downhill. But if there is someone on my tail I also use them to warn him I am slowing.
