I don't think there is a Deal-of the Day equivalent thread on the modern side here. If there is, please let me know. Anyhow, I thought I would post this as I think it's a decent deal for someone looking to get a modern one on the low side: https://columbia.craigslist.org/mcy/d/gilbert-2007-vespa-250/7612700428.html

Looks like a good deal, but if the miles are so low, why doesn't the seller just state the mileage? Low miles means different things to different people.

That is $1000 plus under the asking price for dozens of "garage kept" Vespa LX 50s around here, usually with less than 3k miles on them. The asking for ET/LX 150s is around $3500. But of course they don't sell, they just sit in the adds for months on end.

Then again, maybe that's market. Here's one for $3k. Nice entry point to the bigger bikes.

OK, here's one that just popped up on CL:
https://sfbay.craigslist.org/sby/mcy/d/morgan-hill-vespa-p200e/7627452661.html Seems like an interesting opportunity if you're a fan of these old shifties. You can get the registration penalties waived in California if the bike is this old. Or maybe it's out of the computer system. Then it's pretty easy. |

Deal O' The Day that thing appears to have been laid down pretty good. the shield is borked up fierce along with the cowl. I can't see the fender, but I'd imagine there's damage there too. the tire angle looks funny, so with that damage it might have a bent fork. also, I'd bet good money that it's got massive back fees. btw, do you have any specific evidence or a code that allows for the waving of fees on older machinery? if so I'd love to know about that. |

I love massive back fees...they make for really excellent deals for us Reno (the new northern california) residents!
Also take a look at Bob Jankovics website. For $300 a year he will lease you a property in South Dakota. Having a lease in south Dakota legally allows you to register and license all of your vehicle there as well as getting your own drivers license. They just changed the laws in Nevada about how you can register a "classic" and now a lot of cars don't qualify. I suspect that lots of folks are going to Bob instead of paying outrageous "classic insurance" in nevada and lots of others have no choice for example if you have a 1988 wrangler with 1995 drivetrain swapped in original equipment smog is not there so it fails visual even though everything that was stock on a 95 is still there and it pollutes less with the modern fuel injected engine. When I talked to Bob he told me Dr. Phil has both his Bentley and his wife's Rolls registered and plated in South Dakota. Dr. Phil gets pulled over bi-weekly (because of flashy car with out of state plates) and shows his lease paperwork, proof of registration paperwork and proof of insurance to comply with cali law and two free tickets to his show in Los Angeles and goes on his way. The subject of difficulty registering has come up more than once here and as it has hit me personally I take it personally. I have a bunch of vehicles and while the scoots are easy the cages are now a huge pain. Bob will take your money and you will save money on no more smog tests and way cheaper registration and insurance. They did it to themselves the damn legislators anyways! |

Really wanting to keep this thread alive. I am always looing to see what is out there and when I see something that looks pretty good I like to post it for the group to see.
https://sacramento.craigslist.org/mcy/d/elk-grove-2013-kymco-like-200i/7648524494.html 2013 Kymco Like 200i with about 1,000 miles on it asking $1,250 in the Sacramento CA area. |

So in another thread I asked about how to determine country of origin and then of course after posting do a search and come up with the answer that LA-LO will be in the VIN for the Chinese scooters and RF-RK for the Taiwanese.
So now I ask the question the the modern deal o' the day thread does this affect value? Are the Taiwanese made scooters more desirable and more expensive? I think resale value alone determines the quality of the product and pretty much settles the argument of which is better and by how much because you are putting a number on it. There was about the same year I think 2013 model on the local Reno craigslist that was a Kymco 300 with pretty low miles for less than $2,000 asking and it was listed for a couple of months before it finally sold. The real discounts are some of the deals on used bikes. |

Came across this while looking for a parts bike for my 2008 MP3 250.
Looks like it has been sitting awhile but if he has a title and the brown key this seems to be a pretty good deal at $1900.00. Very low miles according to the speedo pic which I think is showing km. Would make a decent Scooter Cannonball ride. https://www.cycletrader.com/listing/2008-Piaggio-MP3+250-5027203860

So checking my local craigslist motorcycles for sale by owner I stumbled on this gem.
It does not belong in Not-So Modern because it is a Honda despite it being vintage. Also I felt compelled to add it to this thread for a couple of reasons. Number one is that this is in my opinion a really well crafted craigslist post. This guy touches all the bases as he rounds them after that smashing hit and he does not showboat or otherwise appear to blatantly offend while doing so. Also it is if true a really well preserved low mile original at what I think is not obscenely overpriced. They are only asking $2,100, not a lot of money. 1973 CT 90 with 2,568 original miles. https://reno.craigslist.org/mcy/d/meadow-valley-honda-ct-90-trail-90/7655588424.html |

That is a very good price. The auxiliary gas tanks alone are going in the $600 range now. CT's used to be dirt cheap back in the day (like Vespas) but are now commanding high prices especially considering most have not been run in years and no title included (again, like Vespas). Some prices are close or exceeding the asking price on a slightly used Trail 125. The funny thing about all this is the Trail 125 is better in almost every way except there is no hi/lo switch at the counter (front) sprocket. I guess you can't underestimate the lure (and price) of nostalgia.

Under 2,000 miles. https://sfbay.craigslist.org/sby/mcy/d/san-jose-vespa-et4-low-miles/7661411352.html I was just in a conversation with family about thrifting, looking for good stuff at thrift stores. The consensus was that in the Reno area (and probably a lot of other areas too) the resellers have grabbed up anything with any meat left on the bones. What do you want to bet this one went to a reseller in the greater bay area? I am guessing 50/50 chance it went to a flipper. The same thing with all the cars trucks and motorcycles on craigslist or marketplace. If you can recognize a posting by owner who just wants to get rid of it (its priced to move) it will move quickly and if you don't have the cash handy and get over there quick... I am sure this has been going on for a long time but it just seems like it has escalated to be more cutthroat lately. I really want to keep this thread alive for the scooter people. I want to encourage everyone to participate. If you see something that you think is a good deal please post it here and when it's gone the next day you know you were correct. |

So here we have 2009 Vespa 250 GTS with under 5,000 miles asking price is $2,650.
That bike easy has $1,000 of meat on the bone if you take it to an urban area. It is in the middle of the Sierras but it would be a nice drive. https://goldcountry.craigslist.org/mcy/d/nevada-city-2009-piaggio-vespa-250-gts/7662299516.html |

The quality of the scoot is a big part in the pricing, but the other part, as you have already surmised, is the actual location of the item being sold. In the Charlotte, NC area, that GTS would sell pretty quick from $2400 - $2600. Once you take it to over $3,000, it will languish on the market place for months. Reason first: it is a 14 year old machine and unless it's mint, running great - it will sit. Second: there are too many of these garage queens coming up for sale. Most need work to get up and running, but you would not be able to tell that from the asking prices. If you try to explain this to the owners, they will just reply -" Isn't it beautiful - It's an Italian icon - It's a rare Vespa"! "All it needs is a little work, maybe a battery"!

Long time lurker, first time poster. I'm a new rider and looking for a deal on my first Vespa when I stumbled across this GTS 300 and I'm wondering what everyone thinks of the missing brown key? It seems a bit fishy to me that a dealership "lost" the key and wouldn't replace it. I feel like $3,000 is a fair offer, turning this into a really good deal, but am looking for advice. Thanks!

I think the excuse is a bit lame. Others on here will comment as they will know more than me but the red or brown key is important to have as it is the master key. MY advice: walk away from this one. You don't need to start out with problems. Deals come up all the time and with winter coming up, there will be people that want to raise some cash when they are looking at their Vespa sitting in the garage not being used, much like this one.

No keys would be a big red flag. Missing the Brown key isn't so bad if the Black key works, just get some copies immediately.
But the ad says $6000 and you want offer $3000? Am I missing something? That's a big difference. |
