Started a new post on my issue of not starting after water pump and replacement stator on a 2006 GTS250. Apparently the mag pickup was damaged during the first start attempt. Not sure why as this was a replacement stator to go with the water pump assy.

Excuse my ignorance but why the need for a new stator when replacing the waterpump?

And, are the bits youve damaged on the new stator salvageable from the old stator?

This is a 2006 GTS250 with a build date of Feb 2006. It used a different water pump assembly and stator than those with a build date of March 2006 and later.

With the replacement water pump assy, you need to buy the replacement stator assembly.

Follow up:

To recap, this is a 2006 GTS 250 with a Feb 2006 manufacture date. There was a change in water pump/stator design beginning in March 2006. This is referenced in the Scooterwest YouTube video on changing out a water pump.

In the video, it is stated that a different stator is needed when buying the new water pump assembly. I had bought the water pump (8798315) and the replacement stator (58070R). When I reassembled it, the magnetic flywheel wiped out the mag pickup. Turns out the original flywheel is a larger diameter than the ones used after March 2006 (1A016720) which costs about $300.

In hindsight the least expensive solution is to send the original water pump assembly to Scooterwest to be rebuilt. Then the original stator and flywheel can be used. This is what I ultimately did.
