I will be flying to Los Angeles in three weeks to the start of the Scooter Cannonball Run.

It is still a bit hectic because my three Vespa GTs are old and possibly not able to get to the finish in Hilton Head, SC.

I have replaced all of the wear pieces on Vanessa, my 2007 GT that ran in 2016, finishing third, and 2018, dropping out on day two with an unpleasant off on a goat path dirt road.

But on a long test, she stumbled at near full throttle, showing fueling issues.

I will change a few things and try again, but should that not work, I could ide Razzo, my beautiful 2005 GT, or the Big Ugly, my 2018 Yamaha Xmax, even though it's engine exceeds the maximum displacement allowed. I asked and can run it if I want, but can't compete.

The next big preparation is to get the chosen scooter to Cdwise in Tennessee for the trailer ride to California.

250 riders are registered. There will probably be around 200 at the start.

27 started in my first SCR in Hyder, AK. 37 started in 2016 in Fernandina Beach, FL.

It should be an interesting adventure.

I had to go to the backup scooter since I could not get the water pump issue resolved on the one I ran in 2021. Disappointed as that is my scooter and the backup is Margot's
She is sticker adverse so I can't decorate it
See you in 3 weeks!

Well I was reconfirming hotels since a rider posted their hotel in Los Alamos was cancelled without their knowledge. Turns out ours was as well. There are current 220 riders listed as planning on riding.

I'm hoping to catch a cancellation for Los Alamos June 20-21. Otherwise the closest hotels that have availability are 20-32 miles away.

After some fueling issues with Vanessa last week on a 200 mile test, I found that the vacuum line on the petcock to be filled with goo, probably related to ethanol in the fuel.

I replaced it with a new one, rode her at or near wide open throttle for fifty fast miles with no issues.

Then another perfect 70 mile ride yesterday so I am going to be riding that beat up old Vespa GT in one more SCR.

Shouldn't the hotel be helping you find an alternative, given they cancelled your booking without consent? (Or maybe these are the "20-32 miles away" not great options?)

I still have only booked the first two nights in San Clemente, but have checked and the other towns all have rooms, except Los Alamos.

Luckily, my friend and neighbor, Jim, checked and still has a room at the official hotel and has offered to share.

Now I will get busy and book the rest of them.

The hotel has been less than helpful. At least 3 other reservations were cancelled as well. Some at the Comfort Inn where we had ours and others at the Holiday Inn. When I last talked to them I was put on hold while they checked on why my reservation was cancelled. Instead of finding that out I was greeted by their Vacation Promotions sales person. Who upon my saying I was put on hold about a cancelled reservation not to find out about their vacation promotions was then disconnected when allegedly transferring back.

Explainations given for cancellations have ranged from "you cancelled it, not us" which is wrong in two cases I know about or "the computer canceled them and we don't know why". Sorry sold out. Holiday Inn suggested Santa Fem 32 miles and almost an hour away.

Best option I've found is an Indian casino 15 miles, 22 minutes away.

On June 24, we ride from Blytheville, AR to Rome, GA, mostly through Tennessee.

There are a few checkpoints and bonus photo sites in the state.

I will find a way to get a map to you.

Win and a few others plan on being at the Jailhouse Museum in Lynchburg which is one of the photo bonuses. In the next week or two the checkpoints and bonus photo locations will become public ally available on the cannonball website. There is another either checkpoint or bonus photo west of the Nashville area as well but I don't know it off the hop of my head.

Vanessa washed and loaded for a ride to Tennessee to get on Cheryl and Steve's trailer to California.

Tools and parts too.

Just 1,100 miles in two days for me.

Then I fly out on the 16th.

Can't wait to get started.

I think one of the issues that causes overbooking is that there are a plethora of companies that book hotel rooms online. Add to that the corporation that owns the name of the hotel chain does reservations, and the owner, who is likely a franchiser, also does reservations. So if there was a group rate given by the company that owns the name of the chain, it may have been at odds with what the owner of the actual hotel knew they could get for this particular evening.
I doubt very much anyone can call the hotel and offer bribes to whoever answers the phone, in order to get them to cancel reservations.

This sounds like it would be a fun challenge. Maybe some day. Your cancellations are not uncommon anymore as we have had a 6 room hold for a wedding party all cancelled last minute. Hotel said they weren't sure but front desk said it was gov mandate for housing people.

I spent the day putting the finishing touches on my now 183cc YaMalossi SMax, and I gotta say that I am very impressed by that little engine. It makes good power up to about 9200 rpms and flicks through corners sweeter than my GT 200 on a great day. I did about 20 miles of unpaved roads in the rain today. That was interesting. I've been trying to figure the bike out, and what I've decided is that it works best to ride it like a supermotard.
All that's missing is the exhaust, which should be here late this week. Montse Costa is giving me a carbon fiber exhaust system and a JCosta teeshirt. I put their variator in for a few days of evaluation, and I'm probably going to use it at least on the days we climb and corner.
Or I'll use a stock variator and dr pulley sliders, because the consensus among Youtube tuning experts is that's the best. ROFL emoticon
There's another variator I like, but I can't recall who makes it.
I am really looking forward to this SCB.

The only place where there is an issue with hotels is Los Alamos. Some folks are camping before the start. On Saturday they will be doing check-ins and tech inspections for the 2023 Scooter Cannonball at the Lost Winds Brewing Company starting at noon. All are welcome and it will probably be the best time to chat with cannonball riders.

I just confirmed my hotel in Los Alamos - that one seems to be the one giving us the most trouble.

I decided to get a Yamaha SMax specifically for Cannonball. I totaled my GTS last time and could not bear to risk the latest one I have. I also wanted something a bit smaller that would keep my speed in check. But the SMax is a lively thing in the corners!

I did a 5 day training trip on the SMax hitting the twisties of SE Ohio and Hocking Hills and it went pretty well.

As I delivered Vanessa to cdwise's house near Knoxville, I received a message that changed my scooter for the run.

Today, My wife and I drove to St. Petersburg to pick up a nearly new 2023 Vespa GTS HPE2.

I then rode it 225 miles back to Jacksonville to get it to 600 for the first service.

Next Monday I will take this one back to Tennessee to swap it with Vanessa for the ride to the start in California.

It was all a request from a great friend.

My other Vespa experience is in the three GT 200L scooters I still own.

2005, 2006 & 2007.

40,000 miles, 106,000 miles and 30,000 miles respectfully.

My experience with the new 2023 is riding it 230 miles home from St. Petersburg on Monday.

Much of the difference is age.

The new one has new everything as it had only 344 miles on it when I started.

Because I was still in the break-in stage, I didn't push it hard as I chose a route that started in a highly developed area north of St. Petersburg so I could vary speed and stop at lights.

Then it changed to rural Florida but I still chose routes where I could keep the speed down and going through towns so I would slow down and stop at lights and stop signs.

It is clearly faster with a very refined suspension (again, all new parts).

I didn't like the keyless ignition at first only because I didn't understand how it worked, but spoke with cdwise who let me know how easy it is to use. Now I like it.

The instrumentation has much more information even though this is the base model and I appreciate having two trip odometers.

The new scooter represents a natural progression in the development of this model. Probably better in every way.

And it is beautiful in white.

I still haven't taken a photo.

It just doesn't feel right yet.

I rode Ghost 25 miles to the beach yesterday.

It was my wife's birthday and our daughter came home for the occasion.

They wanted some mother / daughter time at a beachfront hotel, so they booked two nights in the Atlantic Beach Town Center at a great old motel.

I had the scooter's 600 mile service completed earlier in the day, so it could finally be ridden as intended...faster.

All I can say is that that scooter is a hotrod.

Midrange acceleration is far superior to the old GTs, as it should be.

Haven't tested top speed yet, but I will say, Like Rolls Royce used to, "adequate"

It is going to be fun have it for the Cannonball and upcoming rides.

Tracking for individual riders is now live as several have started their journey to San Clemente. Go to https://scootercannonball.com/riders and click to the rider to see their check ins.

I did some checking on my ride to Columbus last week and will be checking in both as a rider and in the support truck as we make our way west Tuesday. Matt, 4in6iscool driving support truck S4 has his live as he journeys to the start. Doug some of you know as OAD, Old as Dirt will be driving support truck S3.

Not Fast Just Furious team consists of:

#23 GotMoko
#41 Wleuthold, aka CashCow on this forum
#56 cdwise
#64 GRides
#89 gopam

and last but not least our support driver Steve as S7

Other Modern Vespa rides may want to add their cannonball rider number and handle to make it easier to follow along.

It is my understanding that come next Sunday when the Cannonball officially starts the home page of the cannonball site https://scootercannonball.com/ will transform into a live tracking page similar to the old Followride site. Many including me when I wasn't riding in it have enjoyed following along as the cannonball progresses.

Might be more of a challenge this year with 220 registered riders spread across six classes. Largest is the 278 class dominated by Vespa GTS/GTVs. Piaggio group (Aprilia, Piaggio, Vespa) and Hondas far outnumber any other maker.

Under a special exception due to demand small 125 and lower cc motorcycle almost exclusively Groms and Monkeys but some almost scooters like the Honda CT trails (doesn't meet 3 of the 5 as required like the Super Cub sibling does) are allowed to run but I believe are only competing in their class not overall. They are competing with a few manual scooters entered with vintage (Vespa), Yamaha Riva or Stella/Baja.

If even half the currently registered riders show it it should be a very interesting year.

Here we go again!

Taking Ken's Ghost tomorrow morning to swap it out with Vanessa, the scooter I took to Knoxville last weekend.

Not much prep needed for a scooter with only 725 miles on it.

I will be riding in my usual style, as fast as is comfortable with minimal stopping time.

That should reduce the stress level.

Bill
Mounted up, ready to roll early in the morning.

Special exception this year due to the homage to the early cannonballs with their class system. The last 2-3 cannonballs they've been begging to be let in so whether or not thiy will be allowed in when classes go back into hibernation I have no clue.

They are only eligible to compete in their class not in the overall stands if I remember correctly.

Over half of the Not Fast Just Furious team are already in California. The remaining two of us are loaded on the trailer and head west tomorrow.

It should make for interesting competition within their group.

Second question. DaBinche is listed on a Trail Cub. How does that qualify without leg shields?
