I'm out but Pam is still running strong. Just talked to her and the bike is running great and she is in good spirits. Almost done with Day 4.

No major mishaps or wrong turns. Woo Hoo!

I decided to pull out on day 2 and made it home last night. Even though I wasn't on a bike I did a Cannonball day on the road -- almost 10 hrs.

So, what happened?

Pinky was running very hot the entire time (but not overheating) and had trouble starting when at temperature.

This made fuel stops rather more exciting than I would have liked. It was manageable but there's clearly something going on.

On day 1 the clutch was slipping and the tank vent valve seized creating a LOT of pressure in the tank. I resolved both in Havasu that night. The clutch just need to be scuffed up and I nicked the vent hose to give the pressure somewhere to go. It seems to be breathing ok so maybe the valve is ok and the extreme heat & pressure just created some dynamics that it couldn't handle.

On day 2 it decided to die in the middle of nowhere (while idling) and would not start back up again. I was able to get it on the trailer surprisingly quickly as Steve was luckily not far behind us at that point.

I found exactly 1 10' trailer in a 100 mile radius of flagstaff and decided to take the out as home was still within a day's drive. I can't trust that it wouldn't die on me again. I've gotten lucky twice in one week and didn't want to tempt fate. The wrenching in the parking lot in 100+ heat was a big factor. I just didn't want to be doing that every night. A few days down the road and maybe I would have chosen an other option. It sucks and I'm really bummed at how things turned out.

It's a real shame as she was otherwise running great. The gearing changes were exactly what I needed. Plenty of power uphill, close to 80 on the flats and staying well short of the rev limiter. I could let Pam rally and easily catch back up with her. Gear choices were appropriate. I was able to stay hydrated and cool even as the temps topped 109 in Parker.

I feel sorry for you, GotMojo. Through Pam's videos I feel I've gotten to know you (which obviously I haven't ), so I would have hoped you'd had a better experience.

Hope you'll have that one in 2025!

The three unpaved dirt sections this year, all under 10 miles, were, by design, optional - you could reach all of the bonus/checkpoints through paved roads with minimal travel time impact.

It's all paved from here on out unless someone finds one on their own!

Hi MV heroes,

I'm doing great!! But I'm putting out an SOS for DJ Tiny. His 2021 Vespa HPE is having issues & he's trying to locate parts.
If anyone has any of the following parts tonight in Blytheville Arkansas or along the route tomorrow to Rome. Georgia please pm me and I'll give you his support car contact info which is his wife Serena & her sister Angela.

See photo - I just heard he might not need the half pulley.

If anyone can help you will be celebrated in my YouTube scooter cannonball 2023 series and I will sing you a song. Along with being compensated for the HPE parts.

An update :

GoPam is riding her little heart out on the GT200 and I have to say I'm kicking ass!!!
At the end of today, Day 7, I was playing pass & go & pass & go with #206 Warren (red wasp)from Washington on a red vespa 300 and I think #2 Irish on a yellow vespa 300. I'd pass them, then I'd wave as they had more power to pass me. But look out haha, I go fast downhill !! It was a blast riding with you guys. I had a short cut to the final hotel BUT I got stuck at a red light!
They beat me there & waited for me to pull up to say "nice riding."
It was so much FUN riding with you guys. Except the part getting stuck behind a semi going slow in the twisties lol. 🤪🤡

And an update….DJ Tiny made arrangements to get parts tonight in Rome, GA. So the SOS is over.
Wish him luck to fix his vespa so he can ride the final day 8
LOVE you DJ Tiny. Love you all.

For DJ Tiny: Just remember, Rome GA is an hour away from Marietta Vespa, and they are closed on Sunday. Call them now and arrange something if you think that you will not be able to obtain parts. They might even be kind enough to bring them since you are going to give someone a shout out.

I'm sorry I had to take off as soon as I did! I could feel the beginnings of heat exhaustion (I didn't plan well for what I did), so I went back to my campsite on Skidaway Island before I got loopy enough to not be roadworthy.

I carried a camera on a lanyard and took photos when something looked compelling.

There's a lot of good riding to be done, for sure.

Bill, thank you for sharing those bits of old Route 66. I rode a fair bit of the Arizona segments right before the pandemic. Even got onto the 1926 alignment in some places. Loved the reproduction Burma Shave signs too!

They should review the handicaps. You know the Taggarts ride together. She finishes 2nd on a 155cc and he finishes 5th on a 200cc. The top ten were all 200 and 150cc scooters with nothing bigger getting a sniff in the top ten.

The top finishers were all Japanese. Maybe a reliability handicap...?

More to do with performance vs handicap and age. The Smax in particular performs above its handicap and is the scooter of choice for serious intend riders trying for atop 5-10 finish. ADV handles dirt better as tropically do those who choose it.

Plenty of belts replaces on the Japanese scoots, top end rebuild on one of the Smaxes. Factor in that almost all of them are less than 3 years old as well. To get a similar handicap as a two year old Burgman 200 on a Vespa you are looking at a 2004-5 GT. A scooter less than 3 years old should have less issues than am 18+ year old scooter no matter how well maintained.

Smax started in 2015, not three years ago. The belt and variator issues I observed, including on Vespas, were self inflicted and largely based on bad advice from youtube tuning mavens. The reason so many Honda scooters had transmission issues is that many of their owners followed the same expert advice. One Hondista informed me that Malossi belts slip if you use a stock contra spring, because the stock spring is too weak to handle the added power of the belt. K? The same ride managed to destroy a dr pulley variator and a couple of stock belts in a couple of days. And someone burned up a Polini variator that was put in an HPE at a Vespa dealership. And there do appear to be issues with the HPE belt that weren't present before. But as far as I know, no Malossi transmission parts were harmed in the making of this cannonball. And that's not for a lack of trying.
Next Cannonball will likely allow 125cc and under motorcycles to compete. Should be even more fun.
Do they make a 125cc Hayabusa?

Can someone explain to me the points calculation including the handicap? My guess is "achieved score" divided by "handicap". So for example: 500 points divided by 125.51% handicap (Vespa GTS 300 2023) = 398.37 scoring points.

Furthermore, I would be interested to know if the given times for the individual segments can be reached without exceeding the allowed speed. Or in other words, do you drive at the technically achievable limit?

The top speed of a Yamaha Smax 155cc and a GTS 300 is not much different, but the difference in the handicap is serious.

Riding a scooter at given time is easy without speeding you have a handicap fairly close to 100. If you have a high handicap like 126 you will have to speed to overcome the handicap to score well. If you have a low handicap such as the two Stellas, Riva or Vintage Vespa you can even go under the posted speed and still score well.
