Hello. My daughter rides a fly 50 4T. It's been sitting unused for at least 2 years, I went and picked it up from the storage locker at her apartment building this spring to get it running as she hadn't used fuel stabilizer or otherwise prepped it for long-term (or short-term) storage.

It was pretty easy to start after disassembling and soaking the carb. But... it was making a bad mechanical noise, which I assumed was coming from the transmission. I opened it up expecting to see a shredded belt but nope, everything looked ok. variator and clutch were pretty glazed but serviceable, rollers were still round. I put enough parts back together to start it... variator installed so starter gear could be installed, no clutch, no belt. Same awful noise. I pulled the covers off the other side of the engine, nope, nuttin' in there. It occurred to me then that what I was hearing was a spun crank bearing. Can't imaging one failing on a 50cc scooter but I'm not the original owner and it looked like it had been pretty neglected when we got it.

My question is, is it worth rebuilding this motor? I've rebuilt some larger motorcycle engines and the cost of the seal kits is often pretty outrageous. I looked around and these scoots seem to sell for $2000-2500 regardless of age or condition, so it would be a hit for my daughter to have to replace it, and I'm capable of doing the work. just need some pointers on where I can get bearings & seals, as well as any advice on known issues I should address "while I'm in there".

As always, thanks so much for any advice, this forum is just awesome.

Thanks

Dave

I always search Amazon and Ebay once I have a part #. Good luck

I think the values you are seeing are for Vespas, and not Piaggio models. That said, the parts are cheap, so it's more a matter of whether or not you want to put the time into it.

I'm with Motovista on prices. The prices you are quoting don't really apply to used Flys and Typhoons. Heck, I bought a 150 Typhoon brand new for $2200 OTD when my dealer was closing them out.
