For convenience sake I took my GTS to a nearby general m/c garage for service (and MOT test) a few months ago.

I was just filing the receipt and see they used 10w40…

I'm generally a low mileage, short hop, town rider, although going on a short 400mile tour in a couple of weeks.

Should I change the oil to 5w40?

TIA.

I have run 10w40 in my scooters on occasions without any oil related issues.

As long as it is a high quality synthetic, I would leave it.

I wouldn't. The 5w oil gives you a lower viscosity for starting in cold weather. 10w40 will make no difference, at least through the summer.

I have run Castrol 10W-40 4T full synthetic in wife's 2013 GTV since first oil change and last check it had 27,050 miles on it without any problems. As JKJ-FZ6 says the lower number is more for cold start than anything else. I guess if you park scooter outside in freezing temps and ride in those conditions it might have some small effect. Being a wimp in my old age if it's much under 70ºF the scooter is not going anywhere!

If they used synthetic 10w 40 it will be fine no problems .
If semi synthetic oil was used It would probably still be fine as it would be a motorcycle oil used.

As long as you are not at the extremes of heat or cold, 10w40 is fine.
