Hi There

I had my 6000 mile service recently and when I left i asked when I need to come back and they said 8000 miles. That seems like a small interval..... Thoughts?

Look at the service interval chart in your owners manual. It's all right there.

I had a tech at a local dealership do the same, he made up a service interval when I stopped by. I wouldn't worry about that.

Here is a link to a page from a Piaggio manual with the factory recommended service schedule for the '22 GTS 300 hpe.

And note the intermediate services are nearly all 'check' - like check the oil and tyre pressures. Well if you don't do that anyway, fair enough, take it in every 2,000 miles, but if you DO do your own checks, just go by the big service intervals.

I check my oil and tire pressure…….ok, so looks like my next service is 12,400 miles! That looks about right.

Given your experience at that shop, 6000 + however far to the nearest competent dealer miles.

...seems moot, but maybe they meant for you to drive about 8000 miles "more" and come back ? ? ?

I had a similar experience awhile back. Brought my GTS in for a recall repair and was told I was overdue for my 3,000 mile service. Confused, I asked what the service consisted of since the owner's manual says the next major service after 600 miles is at 6,000 miles. Guy mentioned something about how the shop manual has different service intervals, but didn't explain what this mysterious 3,000 mile service was about so I just said I'd be back at 6,000.

I thought I remembered this topic - yup, I wrote about it 14 years ago:
There is no 3000 mile service!

In fairness, the previous Quasar maintenance schedule included a separate mileage target at about 8k miles for belt replacement. Now the HPE maintenance schedule has moved that to the 6k interval. Since knowing when the drive belt is about to fail is really more art than science, I'm not sure whether the adjustment is really a judgement by Piaggio that the belt in the HPE engine does not last as long, or is simply a move to simplify the service schedule. The decision about when to replace the belt remains a judgement call for the DIY garage mechanic. If a shop does all your servicing, have the belt and rollers inspected at 6k and replace based on condition or just replace at 6k for piece of mind. Perhaps other HPE owners will share how they handle this decision.
