Haven't ridden my 2008 mp3 500 for 1.5 years. It's been garaged on the center stand with the tilt lock off.

Testing things out today on the stationary bike and I found there is a groaning noise from the front end when leaning the bike in either direction - but only with the front brake engaged. When the front brake isn't engaged, no noise at all when leaning. The tilt lock appears to be functioning normally.

Front brake doesn't appear to be slipping... The noise seems to be coming from the area of the tilting mechanism (haven't disassembled anything to see if I can tell what is going on), but I don't understand what the application of the front brakes would have to do with it.

Anyone have any tips on where to start looking? Haven't taken it out for a test ride yet... Want to know what the cause of the noise is first. Thanks!

Having the brakes on locks the suspension somewhat. This is similar to what happens when you apply the rear brake, the engine noise seems to go faster. that isn't the case of course, it's just that with the rear brake engaged and the rear suspension locked somewhat, the resonant frequency of the whole unsprung weight changes.

So back to the front brakes - with the suspension somewhat locked, there'll be some resistance to tilting the bike on an MP3. The bits resisting might well moan and groan.

Could be the pads rubbing on a rusty tilt lock quadrant

Probably a bit of grime and rust on the pads and disc, give it a ride using brake a lot to clean it up, and then see if it still moans

"Groan when leaning" tells me potential noisy bearing(s) in the tilt lock system.

Just wanted to say thanks for the replies and to report the groan is mostly gone after taking it out for a few rides.

So now if the bike starts groaning again while leaned over on a great ride.... its a sign the bike is having as much fun as you are.

Sorry, I'll see myself to the shame corner and stay there till forgiven by the mods
