Going though past threads it seems like the factory top case is not well regarded for function/price but sure looks good.

Is there a consensus on Shad vs Givi? I'm considering one of these for my Piaggio Liberty 150.

I've used both and prefer Shad. I'm not sure I can articulate exactly why, though -- it might really just be a preference for some of the Shad mid-size models (SH40, SH42, etc).

The biggest non-cosmetic difference I've found is that the SHAD case lids can be latched shut without the key, unlocked, whereas the GIVI cases can only be latched shut in a locked state, and the key is required.

I'm sure each engineer felt their design was preferable. I don't have a preference but all my cases are GIVI.

Like Jess I've owned both. I like being able to close the Shad case without locking it but in general prefer the shape of the Givi. Hard to go wrong with either one.

I've got two Givis that have been with me for 10+ years. I don't have as much familiarity with the Shad stuff, but from what I've heard its essentially a matter of which features you want and what you want to spend. I have to admit, I'm seriously tempted by the OEM color-matched cases, but the joy of snapping a case off one motorcycle or scooter and on to the other is a powerful motivator to stay with Givi (in my case [sorry]).

I have both Givi and Shad. No issues with either.
If you're planning to fit a helmet I'd suggest to test if it fits before purchase.

The internal dimensions specified are accurate but the latch area does protrude slightly internally and may interfere.

Example: My Shark EVO ES modular (Large) will fit into a Givi B29NT or E300N2 easily but not into a Shad SH29 (latch area interferes.) Ok in a Shad SH33.

I've also had both and prefer Shad. As others have said, you can shut it without locking it. I also find the Shad easier to open one handed when you are loaded up with shopping bags.

I've had both, and Kappas as well. But none on a Vespa specifically so these are my thoughts and feelings based on motorcycle experience:

Givi, I just feel has better quality.

Kappa, like Givi (parent company), but less frills and price.

Shad, the not needing the key is nice for quick day to day errands but besides that, meh... I bought one for my trip across Italy because it was what fit the mounting setup on my G650GS best in terms of not eating into passenger space. It was fine. Came with some extra hardware which was nice. Still prefer givi for wider assortment and I would have been able to key match my side and top cases.

I've had a large Givi on my BMWs in the past. Presently have a Givi case on both my Vespas. No complaints. Never tried a Shad.

Ha. I just got rid of my broken Piaggio topcase with backrest. Sorry to see it go, but it was done for. Swapped it for a GIVI and it fits my jacket, my full face Shoei helmet, and everything else I've needed to shlep with me. I like that it has to lock. I commute in and out of NYC and I don't want to worry about tinkering. Also super easy to take off the entire case if needed.

I went with Givi. There were some frustrations involved in using the factory folding rack but a pair of hose clamps to hold it in place and a dremel to relieve the base plate where needed (along with water and snacks because i was getting grompy) eventually won the day.

Yes it's slightly annoying that the key has to stay in it until it's locked again but that prevents my ADHD from walking away with stuff inside and unlocked.

Bonus points it makes a great platform for stickers

Never used a Givi topcase but have had multiple Shad cases on multis bikes and they've all been great. Will continue to buy and use them as long as they continue to make quality gear.

I have had a couple of Givi cases over the years and both held up exceptionally well. They seem to be very durable and able to accommodate helmets, small bags and laptop backpacks easily. I've used them for commuting for years and for long multi-day trips.

If you're so inclined, Admore Lighting has kits for 3 Shad cases, but more options for the Givi cases (and the older style OEM Vespa case). I've found them to be reliable and effective.

I think the shape of the Shad would look better on a Vespa, but Givi makes some darn good top cases. I have a 52L Trekker on my ADV bike and it's been tough as nails for over 8 years now, including a wreck that totaled the bike it was on. For me the key measurement is height. If it's not 12" tall my XL full face helmet won't fit.

For my white BV350 I'm going with the Shad SH50 since it has a white color plate which makes for a good match. There are no more EOM 48 liter color matched top cases available since they stopped making them. My plan is to just keep it always attached to the bike and use one of their inner bags to store things in.

Hmm, I got the Shad 48L top case plate in white last month before the cannonball. I ordered it from CycleGear as they had the best price at the time. This is it with my cannonball graphics on it.
