From 1954 to 1981, there was no accepted universal standard for these numbers, so different auto and motorcycle manufacturers used different formats.
I found a number of websites that do free searches on stolen vehicle VINs, but they all seem to require the current standard format 17 character VIN.

I'm trying to check VBC1T*148326* , which Scooter Help recognizes as a 1971 Vespa 150 Super. Anybody tried to do this and find a way that works?

Thanks

I took a vin into the local station and asked the front desk clerk. 5 minutes later they gave me a thumbs up. Easy peazy.

Vin audit is what I use. It is a paid service but it does searches with less than the 17 character VIN.

In PA, the local police will do it, no charge. Use DMV form MV-41.

You can use the NICB VIN check site . Just pad the value out to 17 digits, so VBC1T 148326 become VBC1T000000148326

BTW, that VIN is neither stolen nor a salvage title, so good-to-go.

Chandler, you are a Prince! Thanks so much for the method AND the good news!
I am slowly inching closer... Can you say cheap IndoBodge w/ 'potential'?
just need confirmation from my magnet wielding, tools to pull gas tank packing Vespa knowledgeable buddy that the frame is major collision & cancer free and VIN matches.
Anybody have a Super headset they'd swap for this uber desirable trap? Looks like a GLASS lens, maybe genuine Siem setup??? Leggy badge, LOL!

Well, I will be doggonned! I'm getting nervous but I am rescinding my headset swap offer because it turns out that this trap headset was normal on these DanMotor Vespas. I rather suspect that this one came from the small horde I found out about back here: PT Danmotors Super-T & more

Yikes, cousins!

If it is a Danmotors Vespa, that interesting trap headset is correct. I like those alot. I've missed out on a few over the years. I do have a round headset for trade, if that is ever an option.

Hurry up and scoop it up, before I drive up and grab it myself

Heh heh, thanks anyway, but I'm hanging on to this unusual headset and keeping this bike original. The trap headsets I've seen before all have older style 'fan' speedos, but our Indo Super traps have newer 'clamshell' style, same speedos Italian Supers have.

It IS a legit Indonesian bike, not stolen or wrecked, and turns out that it DOES come with a title, more or less.

Love the neatly cramped handwriting! I hope Ebeth catches wind of this... I need to start a fresh project thread, I'm already getting lots of great photos to share

Genuine Italian!
Notice the Piaggio hex impression the Italian one lacks.
