Broke Vespa driver here!

Someone tried to steal my 2015 GTS300 and now the steering is really loose and misaligned with the front wheel.

Is this something that I can fix myself with basic tools?

My research is bringing up conflicting information - some resources say that it's a simple fix of tightening the steering with a wrench, others that I need specialty tools. I appreciate any input / instructions!

If it was still tight (you say yours is now loose) you could just bang the bars against the end-stop until it all lined up.

However, it sounds like you'll have to do some simple surgery.

Open up the headset:
Remove windscreen if fitted, remove brake reservoir covers, remove mirror stalks, then carefully remove screws without letting them fall down into the innards, prise apart the two halves being mindful of tabs.

Now look for the allen-bolt (8mm?) that secures the handlebars to the steering column. Undo it a tiny bit, get the alignment right, and tighten it up. It's 'just right' when the bars are firmly staying in place, but could move if banged hard. This'll stop the steering lock being broken if thieves ever try to steal the bike - which may not be a concern where you live.

Thanks, jimc Clap emoticon

I was able to tighten the bolt with the basic tools I had.

I tightened it quite a bit, but it is loose enough that I was able to make the final minor adjustments with my bare hands. Feels OK when I'm driving though - is this safe?

Like brakes, problems with the steering gear can kill you. I'd have a professional mechanic look at the scooter before riding it anywhere.

It's safe enough if it's hard but just possible to move the bars by hand with the front wheel between your legs.
