Today I decided to get to work replacing the flywheel oil seal that leaked in the pressure test I did.

So I got to work. First I removed the clutch cover and found no castle nut. Good news there. Then I removed the jug. That went easily as well. Took the carb and air box off and then the flywheel and stator, which I marked with marker to make sure she goes back in correctly. Then removed all the case bolts. After that I took my rubber mallet and whacked it good to get the seal to break. Finally it did just a smidge and the rest of the gear oil dripped out. That gave me an in to wedge plastic scrapers in to pop the case open. Little tap on each one working my way around till she was open. Didn't take too long, maybe 10 mins or so, that part at least. Getting it started took about 2hrs of whacking it to get a little daylight. I don't hit hard so probably would have taken 5mins for a normal human.

Swapped out the kickstart buffers and the cog popped off. Does that just wedge back in there on top of that metal flap or no?

Now should I go whole hog and replace all the seals? Which ones are recommended if so? The bearings look fine and spin super smooth so I'm not going to bother with them till next time.

My first time. May god have mercy on my souls.
Surprise. Someone's played with the clutch before…

Off with their heads!
Off with their heads!
Time to remove the carb and split these cases!

I used a rubber mallet to open her up just a touch then used plastic paint scrapers to slowly wedge her open. Not too bad honestly.

Here's the culprit.

Rest easy seal. Rest easy. You done good old friend.

Is this original or no? Just wondering if anyone's cracked the cases before me.

I've got some time with this again and have a question for the hive.

I have a feeling I know the answer but I'll ask away

Is it time for a new crank?
We're just slowly heading towards a full rebuild. Bearings, seals etc etc.
Need to get the tool to remove the gear stack and rear axle and crank. Not able to for a few weeks though.
That, that's is something right there.

Besides the mangled clutch nut threads, is the rest OK, the big end rod bearing seem healthy & the small end bearing journal look good? Rotary pad surface is decent? Can you measure any serious runout? Maybe just invest in a good quality nut die to chase those threads clean and use Mercado's deluxe hex clutch nut and lock washer?

This modern style nut uses a 15mm socket instead of the castle clutch nut and tab washer found on most large frame Vespas. The pack includes a wave washer and a serrated washer. The wave washer works on Cosa clutches only but the serrated washer works all types. The serrated provides stronger grip and is highly recommended. Do not use the two washers together.

yeah i'm going with bin that immediately

no need to risk the clutch detaching at high RPM and locking up the whole works.

It truly did. Removed the crank and it's getting tossed. The flywheel key is interesting to say the least. Already got the seals installed, next up is bearings. With a VNB the bearings have to go on the crank before install yea?
That's something for sure.

I'm sure it had a good run in its life. Time to retire friend.

Took me a while eh? Finally had time today to get the headset buttoned up and the exhaust installed.

All stock set up except for the 20.20 carb and sip road 2.0 exhaust.
Timing is set to 19° as well.

I'd go for a BE5 or E3 with that 160. But JetEye would know....
