So my dad just bought a used vespa GT 200 -04. It isn't running as smooth as mine, so I thought I'd take a look at the carburetor.

I took the carburetor out (using Vespa Motorsport's fantastic youtube tutorial) and saw that one of the two plastic float "cubes" are almost completely filled with gasoline.
This carburetor is a bit different from the one in the tutorial (metall lid for the throttle slide instead of plastic, different slide without the "wings", and also see through yellowish plastic float)

I can't compare with the float on my same model vespa since it's a -06 and has the carburetor with the black float.

But my guess and question for you guys is, the float is supposed to be empty right?

And also, that cracked old plastic cover has a jet under it, what happens if I remove it completely? I don't want those little plastic pieces falling off inside the carb.

Couldn't find answers to this anywhere else, cheers!

Correct, the float has been compromised. It probably cracked at the seam and filled.

You'll need to replace it.

The other plastic cover is for the choke jet. You could leave off, but it may cause hard starting. I'd recommend looking for a replacement for that as well.

Frallzor, welcome to MV!

What an excellent first post with beautiful photos. Please don't be a stranger and show off your dad and his new-to-him scooter when it's back on the road.

Thank you so much for quick answers and a warm welcome! A new float is currently added to my shopping cart along with some other parts to get our GT's cruising down the streets here in Sweden as soon as possible!

Hey, welcome. You may want to order a full rebuilt kit for that carb it possible. Float needle and any o-rings are probably ready to be replaced. Check the vacuum diaphragm as well.

in addition to what T said, keep in mind that the float pin only comes out from one side. use a very small pin punch and a very small hammer or you risk cracking off one of the post mounts for the pin. then you get to buy a new carb.

good luck with the work!
