The condenser that's in it is OK, my thinking is if I wire a 2nd external condenser together and one dies will the other one work and keep me on the road

it depends on how the internal one fails.

you basically have two capacitors in parallel, so they add together when they are both working.

if one shorts out then the short bypasses both of them.
if one become "open" then the remaining one will still work.

No, If one shorts, the circuit becomes grounded and the surviving one won't charge because all the juice escapes thru the other one. Just imagine they are light bulbs in parallel, if one blows (open circuit) the other still lights up, but if one becomes shorted to ground the other won't light up, but you'll likely blow a fuse if there is one and enuff amperage.

I have put two condensers external and removed the internal. That allowed me to move the wire from one to the other if the current one fails.

it was on a Benelli/wards riverside.

same could be done on a lambretta. I mounted it on the same bracket as the coil. wire then just goes from the hot side of the coil to the condenser.
