With a probable excess of renewable energy in the EU within a few years, green hydrogen is now on the cards.

I love the idea of green hydrogen but it's the refitting the fuel stations and all the new trucks to distribute it etc that makes it unlikely to be main stream.

so therefore it's other green fuels that interest me

It's a bit harder than fitting stations out for LPG, but they did that just fine in those places where it was often used as an alternative or extra fuel.

yeah, they did that here for the taxis but it was only in some of the city stations never the one horse towns where I need it

Let's just get those renewables online first. Especially if they're well distributed, like having solar on every house, car park and commercial roof.

Yes, many EU areas already have excess renewable energy generation for parts of the day and in some places wind and solar powered hydrogen production are currently being worked on.

That Bosch can do that is likely connected to the company being something like a limited liability corporation run by a non-profit foundation. Rather unusual.

Yup - Hydrogen is the future.

1- Fuel cell (think Totoya Mirai).
2- Gas boilers (there are already gas boilers compatible with Hydrogen - and we managed to switch from Coal Gas to Natural Gas so I'm sure we can switch to Hydrogen).
3- Combustion engines for heavy machinery (although synthetic fuel could be made using renewable energy instead - still being debated).

Actually that is only very rarely the case.

The excess can happen on days ideal for solar and wind and with low consumption of energy by the industry, as on a sunday afternoon, but you have to take into account that the nuclear power plants constantly produce at full power. So the excess of solar and wind is on top off.

In average solar and wind account for a minor 15-20% of electric energy.

I just came back from a visit to Europe and I had discussions with friends about energy generation and they told me about local plans for hydrogen plants using renewable energy, mostly wind power in this particular case.

The reason for that is, that the excess capacity is there already. On some days not all windmills are in operation, because they are not all needed at the same time. Sure it's on windy days and during off peak hours, that most of the excess energy is available, though that does not matter for the generation of hydrogen.

I don't know which countries and areas you are talking about, certainly not Germany, as nuclear power has been taken out of consideration over there.
