Modern Vespa

I have 2000 km on my new Vespa Primavera 50ccm scooter. I bought it new.
When warm, when I get home, I would turn off the engine, roll into the garage while sitting on it and hear the following clicking noises from the rear wheel as it spins. Is the clicking, crackling sound on the recording normal when the rear wheel is turned slowly? I can hear it from the clutch. Is this normal? What makes that sound?
If I don't load it with my weight, then it doesn't, or the clicking is much quieter.

There was a few weeks ago two different Primavera owners with clicking-sound (only when sitting on it) while pushing forward/backward in the German-Forum. Sound to be the same problem…

Sorry to say that there is no answer in both threads what it is, but it is for sure not normal.

Thank you very much. According to them, the phenomenon is not unique.

pull the transmission cover off, see if you can find any visual clues with the clutch or driven pulley assembly. if everything there check out, spin the wheel and see if you can replicate it.

if you can replicate it, start removing the components one by one while spinning the wheel and you can narrow down the cause. first the clutch bell, then the driven pulley. if you still have the sound, then you're left with the gearbox side.

if you do discover the cause, please report back-- I'd love to know!

The scooter is still under warranty, since I bought it 1 month ago, so I won't touch it. I can also imagine that from 2022 all primaveras/sprints will make this sound, only a few people will notice because a friend of mine also makes the sound, and I found several posts about it on the internet. The dealership has not been able to say anything yet. I have to take it and have them look at it. If anyone else has experienced this with young primavera/sprint, please report it here. Thanks.

I saw that you also wrote in the German forum. So far, there are also only assumptions about what the noise could be.

Unfortunately, at least in the one thread an important question is unanswered: Does the noise only occur when sitting on it while pushing or also when pushing without load? If the Vespa is jacked up on the main stand and the wheel is turned manually or slowly turning with engine power is the noise also there?

In one of the two threads, the OP shares that it is only when pushing when someone sits on it ...

That would mean that it could have something to do with the compression. You could try adjusting the spring preload with the special tool that comes with it and see if there is a change.

Another guess could be the drum brake. Background: I've never heard/read this on the GTS, this one has disc brakes in the rear. The Primavera/Sprint, which is affected in all four (yours, Clampett, both German) cases, has a drum brake as a major difference. Try pulling the rear brake LIGHTLY while pushing: Does the noise change?

I'll try that later(Rolling with brake slightly engaged). To address the load/no load making the noise.
If I have it on center stand and turn the wheel, no noise.
Rolling in the garage, yes. Sitting on it, yes.
Since I'm at different points, I'm not sure if the sound is really different or it just seems different because I'm listening from a different point with sitting vs pushing it.

It is best to check it with two people, then one can also look closely if something is dragging somewhere.

Standing on the center stand, turning the wheel by hand, the sound can be heard even with the engine stopped, but very quietly. You can hear it from the clutch, softly. You can hear this even when it's cold, but it's quieter than when it's warm.
Sitting on it, rolling, with the engine stopped, you can't hear it cold, only warm, but then very loud.
You cannot hear it when the engine is running, because the sound of the engine is loud. Applying the rear brake slightly does not affect the sound.

Well the good news is everybody's is doing it - and they all run just fine.
Bet a cream-filled donut most dealers won't have a clue either - or worse, they'll make up something🙃

Turning the gearbox innards using the rear wheel instead of the engine will make a noise - the gears are not cut to take the driving force in that direction.

In the German forum there is now a solution from a concerned person:

According to the diagnosis of his dealer, it was the rear wheel rim itself. A swap to another rim has eliminated the noise.
