Hello friends, been quite a while since I've been on here. I've missed this. But, lives change.

Due to medical bills, and going from being dinks to living on one salary, my wife and I are downsizing and moving to a much less expensive home - a condo. I've decided that I am going to keep my Vespa, but I won't have the space to keep working on it myself. So I will be downsizing away a lot of decent quality tools.

My fil said a good rule of thumb for quality used tools is to sell them at half of what you paid for them. Does that sound right? Do you all think that would hold true for the Vespa specialty tools as well?

One thing that really makes me cry is I'll need to sell my Handy Lift. It is two years old and very gently used. For people who know - is 1/2 price really all I can expect to get?

Many thanks for any ideas and opinions, and many thanks to everybody here and gone for all the solid advice over the years.

Take good care everybody,
Kim

post the handy lift on FB marketplace for 80% of what you paid. that would be fair.

Clean, 'as new', half price is fair to all sides.

Well-used and shows it but all there and works - one third to one quarter.

Needs repairs - $0 to $5.

I think that can not be answered so sweepingly!

Check for the valuable pieces the called prices on the relevant platforms (taking into account age / condition). Assume that a little room for negotiation must remain. Surely it also has to do with how quickly you have to / want to sell.

If you bought wisely and got your use out of them, you have already received your money's worth. The financial meltdown of 2009 taught me that something is better than nothing. I used to build additions and finish basements. I sold my tools for 20 to 25 cents on the dollar. Are you going to post them individually? FB marketplace sucks. How many canned responses of "is this available" do you have to field before you actually sell it?
For the lift, do like GermanGTSDriver says. Check CL and FB to see what similar items are selling for. At any rate, good luck with your liquidation.

general tools figure if they're high quality name brand and in very very good condition, probably 1/2 of the cheapest online price you can find. if they're not name brand you're looking at swap meet prices-- 1/3 to 1/4 of whatever it is harbor freight gets for it.

speciality tools, you can usually get close to full pop, but vespa tools are funny. I've listed stuff here before at 50% or less and gotten nary a peep.

something like the handy lift, because it's so new and not totally thrashed you should be able to get 75% of list. people will usually jump at those because they don't have to cough up the tax and shipping.

Good point quietly nestled in there ^

It's not about what YOU paid.

It's about what the BUYER can get it for new.

Some people will overpay for stuff and then list it for more than they realize someone can get it for brand new it and then get really angry at me when I won't bail out their bad decision lol

Thanks everybody! Good to know some benchmarks for what is fair to everybody.

I have found an urban tool library and workshop space and I may donate my good 'normal' tools to them. But I haven't found a community motor vehicle workspace for mechanical tools. That would be a nice find.

Take care everybody!

I have been where you are now and more than once. All good points as mentioned. The time you have to sell will tend to work against you as well if you have to ship any tools. I might suggest you keep any that will fit inside of a decent sized tool if possible. Put the rest up for sale on here first because if they are specific to Vespas, people on here will know their worth. Lastly, if you need help, please ask. We are here for you.
