What kind of helmet do you use when riding. I currently have a 3/4 open face. I am looking to get a modular helmet for the colder days to come. What's your thoughts is anyone use of a modular helmet in this group.

i have a shark modular and the nice thing it is a true modular that can easily be worn as 3/4 as the chin part goes in the back of the helmet. but as all will say fit is the most important thing

Do you have the model you use. I am looking for one that the chin bar goes all the way back.

I was 3/4 for many many years. I now use a bell bullitt and absolutely love it. Full face, but very open and cool retro look

I had a Shoei Multitec for a number of years - was happy with it. It got very old, but didn't fall apart (apart from the liner which is normal with age).

Replaced with a Shark Evo One-2 because the price of Neotecs were ridiculous.

I'd say the quality of the Shark isn't as good as my Shoei (don't know what new Shoei's are like)… but it's a nice design. It cost me £200 less, so was a no-brainer even if some parts of it don't last as long.

Moving from flipped to down on the Shark is a two handed affair (you need to click the latch in on either side), but flipping up is easy and the best bit is the chin bar sits behind your head, not above it.

The chin curtain is crap IMO - in that if you have it down, you can't flip the helmet up. It's a neoprene jobby…that you flip down by inserting your finger up in there and pulling it down. People watching might think you're trying to pick your nose.

I prefer the noise in the shark because it's higher pitched - easily attenuated with ear plugs.

The visor and pin lock on the shark are large. Great visibility.

So, all in all, not too bad tbh.

These are called "dual homologated" - meaning they've been safety tested both with and without the chin bar. (P and J and the homologations.)

Roof makes one where the chin bar rotates 180°. Nolan's are removable.

LS2 Valiant. I have 18 helmets and this is the only one that flips to the rear as you say.
It's a bit heavy and the sizing is 2X to small (scaled up from XL to XXXL for me). Nice liner.
The original comes with a collar that blows up to help support the helmet.

I have eight helmets, though one is a duplicate 'spare' of another that I often wear, and is kept new in it's box up on a closet shelf.

One is a Scorpion full-face, another is a HJC full-face, one is an HJC modular, three are open-face 3/4 helmets, and one is a very vintage style 1/2 helmet that I only wear on rare occasion because....well, it's just not the kind of helmet you want to be wearing if you actually need what a helmet does when you crash.

The modular helmets (mostly HJC's) that I have had experience with have been VERY noisy where it comes to wind roar, and I now earplugs whenever I ride a scooter/motorcycle regardless of the helmet type I wear, to try to preserve what hearing I have left.

I would like to buy a new full-face helmet, but am having problems finding new ones that don't have such thick neck rolls that I can no longer get them on my head without tearing my ears off in the attempt. I suppose the manufacturers are making them that way to perhaps reduce wind roar, but I find that helmets that are my size as far as the shell and liners go, are too restrictive in their openings for me to get on without bloody ears.

Like my HJC I90 modular.

HJC I100 in large is 4# 4oz and wider than other modular helmets. My I90 just does fit in my top box -barley.

I have Nolan Modular and have had Bell and Scorpion modulars in the past as well as several full faced helmets. So far, I like the Nolan the best, with its retractable sun visor. For me, a modular helmet works a shade better than a full face as I wear glasses and it is easy to flip up when stopped to cool down at traffic lights. Downsides is extra weight and more noise.

I've had 2 modular helmets. A Scorpion EXO that I wore for 2 years to be sure I liked modular helmets. It convinced me to upgrade to a Shoei Neotec about 7 years ago. The Shoei is far more comfy, quiet, and smaller.

In the summer, I'm still reaching for my completely inadequate half helmet for short rides just because of the heat and convenience.

I've had multiple Nolan modulars, going back to the N90.

The chin-bar on the Nolan can be locked in an open position, but it doesn't rotate completely to the rear. So it can act like a sail at higher speeds.

I bought a LS2 Valiant 2 after an accident a few years ago, mostly because I couldn't find a Nolan in my size. I did like that the chin-bar on the LS2 does rotate all the way back. My Valiant 2 came with a Pinlock insert.

HJC also offers a model where the chin-bar rotates all the way back.

I found the LS2 heavy and noisy. Also, the interior materials in the Nolan are nicer, more plush.

My current Nolan N100-5 is a great helmet. Fit and finish are top notch. It also came with a Pinlock insert. The built in Sunvisor has 4 detents and has a spring loaded retraction system that works very well.

Be sure to check out Revzilla and Web Bike World while researching. The have excellent reviews to help with your decision.

Lastly, try to find a local retailer to check sizing and fitment. Each manufacturer uses different sizing and shell shapes, which can yield very different levels of comfort for different heads.

I love my Nolan N21 (pictured here out of the box) with the clear shield. I just use the fighter jet tint up to about 80km/hr (50 mph) then from the clear down with a neck bandana on cooler days. And if it rains… fighter jet yo, clear down and full vision with no pins on my face from rain!

Ps. And it's reasonably priced!!

Most modulars tend to be fairly heavy. I prefer the Nolans with the removable chinbar (N40, N43e, N44). They are lighter in weight, well ventilated, and have a larger facial opening for improved visibility.

Wow a lot of helmets in my size are all sold out.

I'm more of a long oval head which really limits finding a modular that fits well.

I had an older Noetec that I liked but now they are crazy expensive and very heavy.

Yeah I didn't realize how heavy they are till now.

It's been so long since I had a full face helmet that I never thought of the Neotec as being all that heavy at around 4 lb, but I guess it's weird what you can get used to.

The Nolan N40s still seem to be available.

Arai Corsair X, matte black. Been running Arai for 30+ years. Spendy but worth it. Ear plugs 100% of the time.

OK the ear plugs piece is interesting. I'm always worried about not hearing somebody doing something. It's why I don't listen to music or have earbuds in the first place

Do you find with ear plugs Doto work and you still have a sense of your surroundings or am I just a nervous Nellie Freakazoid?

Ls2 just came out with a new modular where the chin bar flips all the way to the back. Advant, advant x and advant x carbon. Have been waiting for a local dealer to get one in stock. Other than that. The one modular helmet I keep looking at is the shoei neotec 2. I just can't get myself to spend $800 on a helmet. But that is the most comfortable modular I've tried on to date.

Consider the retention system. There's D rings and quick release buckle. You might prefer one over the other (or not). Brands will usually have only one type.

My Arai Rapide is so fucking loud I wouldn't wear it on a highway if I had an alternative.

Earplugs are part of my A.T.G.A.T.T.. Hearing damage isn't anything to fuck with. Earplugs are a common topic in moto circles cause exposure to wind noise etc. can fuckup your hearing over time.

I would hate to ride over ~40mph without earplugs with any helmet.

The noise inside a helmet, in any motorcycle helmet, is loud enough to damage your hearing. Dosage required for this is individual.

There are differences of the noise levels between various helmets, but all are too noisy...actually it is odd, that in the world full of warning signs, helmet manufacturers are not forced to put giant stickers into helmets saying 'This helmet is hazardous to your hearing'

Normal 'foam' -type earplugs filter mostly high frequences...you'll hear things muted, but not too much.

Listening music while riding is a different thing, because it adds a source of interest to your brains...and the more is not merrier from the concentration viewpoint. Many like it though.

I 'downgraded' in the Arai family a year ago, because I found the latest 'Profile V' to have the best fit to my long oval head shape.

To my surprise it was a quieter helmet than my previous, more expensive Arai.
Probably due to the even better fit though.

I don't know the equivalent model name in the US, but over here this is the lowest price full-face Arai.
