Scale of 1 to Bjork, how crazy do we think I would be for going about 300 miles down I5 with a full scale acoustic bass strapped to my back?
No reason.

I've never ridden with mine on my back, but my teacher has. He said having windage that high up can be difficult and can make the front end light.
Can you test it at varying speeds before you commit to 300 miles? |

I could see taking my upright bass on the Vespa for short distances, and maybe only 35-40MPH. But 300 miles at freeway speed? Hard to imagine that going well. You must be getting a real bargain on the bass.

In a crash proof case, or free of all encumbrance to let the strings sing in the wind? Personally, I'd wait for the car to be settled.

If you would be willing to strap it on your back and ride one mile, then strap it on your back and ride one mile. Repeat this action 300 times. Mission accomplished.

I might also throw something vaguely guitar shaped but expendable in the gig bag on the way up to see how bad it is. Absolute worst case I have some friends where I'm picking it up and could have them stow it.

This'll only stick up about 11" past my head, and shouldn't be wider than me. If I do it, I'll probably throw a couple ties around it and me, lest a strap break. Might wrap/tie the top to be narrower too, so it isn't as tempted to catch the wind going over my head. I don't recall claiming to be sane at any point. |

I've considered attaching a surfboard rack. I think a bass would fit in there. Seems all asymmetrical & unwieldy but maybe someone here has direct experience with these and can chime in.
EDIT: sorry Shebalba, I see your post now. ![]() Maybe a bass could fit!

It will disappoint/reassure everyone here that after a questionable test with my electric bass which is a full 8 or 9 inches shorter than the acoustic I have decided to take my car. Hopefully whatever nasty screeching sound it's making doesn't decide to fail in the next 600 miles.
