Scale of 1 to Bjork, how crazy do we think I would be for going about 300 miles down I5 with a full scale acoustic bass strapped to my back?

No reason.

I've never ridden with mine on my back, but my teacher has. He said having windage that high up can be difficult and can make the front end light.

Can you test it at varying speeds before you commit to 300 miles?

It's that I'm purchasing it away from home. My car needs one or two new wheel bearings which makes me want to scoot for the trip. I myself weigh quite a lot and have a long torso so it won't stick up TOO much, and I'm not worried about any part of the scooter being "light", as it were.

Not quite an acoustic bass, simply a proof of concept.

I could see taking my upright bass on the Vespa for short distances, and maybe only 35-40MPH. But 300 miles at freeway speed? Hard to imagine that going well. You must be getting a real bargain on the bass.

I might try the short distances with an electric bass in a gig bag Razz emoticon .
Seems like we have an unusually high percentage of bass players on this forum.

In a crash proof case, or free of all encumbrance to let the strings sing in the wind? Personally, I'd wait for the car to be settled.

If you would be willing to strap it on your back and ride one mile, then strap it on your back and ride one mile. Repeat this action 300 times. Mission accomplished.

Ha, it's more timing than anything - for the record this is an acoustic bass guitar, not an upright bass. I can't even fathom trying that. This'll only stick up about 11" past my head, and shouldn't be wider than me. If I do it, I'll probably throw a couple ties around it and me, lest a strap break. Might wrap/tie the top to be narrower too, so it isn't as tempted to catch the wind going over my head.

I don't recall claiming to be sane at any point.

I might also throw something vaguely guitar shaped but expendable in the gig bag on the way up to see how bad it is. Absolute worst case I have some friends where I'm picking it up and could have them stow it.

I've carried a long scale electric bass on my scooter many times, albeit not at freeway speed. It does create a significant wind drag even at 40MPH.

Shame on you!
Any self-respecting bass player knows that there is no such thing as a "bass guitar".
A guitar is a different instrument.
Is a cello a bass violin? Razz emoticon

An upright bass is a bass violin, not to be confused with a Beatle bass. If I ever say bass guitar it's just to differentiate between my electrics and my upright.

This exactly. I also find "bass guitar" distasteful but when discussing a non-electric bass it's the best shorthand for "not an upright".

I will say it probably helps in my case that I'm made of spare parts. Even though I'm like 5'10" I have the legs of someone who's 5'3" and the torso of someone who's 6'5".

Add the 2XL helmet and seat to sail I'm nearly the length of a full scale bass.

That was my thought though the bass will be a lot thicker. Kayak sidecar would be better. Yeah, I know you aren't talking upright bass but couldn't resist. Frankly, I'd probably just rent a car for the day.

I've considered attaching a surfboard rack. I think a bass would fit in there. Seems all asymmetrical & unwieldy but maybe someone here has direct experience with these and can chime in.

EDIT: sorry Shebalba, I see your post now.

Coming from ZERO experience... I was thinking one could modify the tubing on one of the surfboard holder brackets with a neck hook from a guitar wall mount.

I dunno...

What I do know is we are now 50% on our way to developing a product that no one really asked for!

Well I'd definitely want to travel with it in it's case. I'm thinking maybe a surfboard rack could accommodate that.

It will disappoint/reassure everyone here that after a questionable test with my electric bass which is a full 8 or 9 inches shorter than the acoustic I have decided to take my car. Hopefully whatever nasty screeching sound it's making doesn't decide to fail in the next 600 miles.
