Jake, if your argument is that Lance Stroll deserves a crack at Le Mans because some failed F1 drivers have done well there, it's not a good one.

Agreed that he has the seat because of nepotism. That said, I don't think he's the worst F1 driver on the grid by any stretch. He's just... solidly mediocre. Mostly competent, but decidedly unremarkable. It's not like he didn't put in his time in the junior series -- he acquitted himself reasonably well in his junior career. Otherwise he never would have been allowed on the grid, even with all of Daddy's billions.

But he'll never, ever be a champion.

I'll salute that.

I think winning a world championship is Lawrences dream, not Lances. Lance seemed to perform well at Williams where nothing was really expected of him - he reminds me of Albon in that regard, crumbling at a top team but excelling in a low pressure environment.

I don't think Lance is world championship material, but a Newey assisted Le Mans win in 2025 would have helped to boost his credibility, before a return to the sport in 2026.

Sainz did say that every team without a confirmed driver had physically offered him a contract a couple of weeks ago, and I do wonder if he was offered a 1 year deal from Aston.

I'm also curious as well as to whether the Le Mans entry is an attempt to attract Newey to Aston. They're just about to setup their brand new wind tunnel - the most advanced in F1, paid for before the budget cap kicked in. He'd be working alongside Dan Fallows, who was his main number 2 at Red Bull, and I'm sure Lawrence would write a blank cheque.

Newey was heavily involved with the design of the Valkyrie so you've got that arse about face.

There's more chance of Newey going to Ferrari and designing another WEC car than Lance racing at Le Mans.

My soccer coach, at the Paris American School, St. Cloud.....had a friend on Ford's successful 1966 team at Le Mans. He had a pit pass and came back with some great photos!
(all of the teachers at this K>12 school were Americans, save for our 200 yr old French teacher. School was constructed to serve the growing number of American dependents of military or embassy or NATO/SHAPE staff members.
My high school 4 yrs there. Skipped school SO often to wander Paris with a couple Francs in my pocket. Our senior class prom was in the Jules Verne, 2nd stage of the Eiffel Tower. Then half of us went to the Lido, or the Moulin Rouge, then to Les Halles for a warm Coke and onion soup at daybreak.
For decades - we all have shared the same experience: no one ever believes one word of our senior prom story!
The officer's wives booked that prom in the Tower 4 yrs in advance.

Call me old fashioned but I'd suggest that he was a bit annoyed and not exactly thinking clearly.

I think we've all been there.

In addition to the 10 second penalty, Max has also been given two points on his super license for causing the collision.

Several commentators have mentioned that what transpired yesterday was "the old Max" -- aggressor, rule-breaker, bully. But this is actually the same Max as we saw in 2021 -- it's just that in the intervening years, nobody has been close enough to actually challenge him. Now that he is being challenged again by McLaren, we see what happens when someone actually gets close enough to the front to be a threat -- Max gets desperate, and is willing to destroy both cars rather than concede a place, just as he did against Lewis Hamilton in 2021, when Mercedes was last competitive.

Max is unquestionably a very talented driver. But he is also unquestionably a bully in a fast car.

The RB is at full performance, now several other teams are catching up and Max doesn't like it also listen to the radio comms his old excuses are frequently coming back.

The team radio where GP and Horner tell Max that it was all Lando's fault is sickening to hear. I've completely lost any remaining respect I might have had for Red Bull.

Food for thought: Logan Sargeant has out-qualified Sergio Perez on no less than 7 occasions during this 2024 season.

So the worst driver on the grid in (arguably) the worst car on the grid has out-qualified the second driver of the (arguably) best car on the grid in 7 out of 12 races.

Funny, that.

I will say again: I don't believe that any current F1 driver born anywhere in North America deserves the seat they are currently occupying.

Naturally, as a Brit, Silverstone has always been my favourite race - it certainly topped any of the previous ones! Six cars from four teams in real contention the whole way round.

This. I would have even been pleased if Max had eventually overtaken the lead. Not as pleased, but still satisfied that it was a proper race.

In keeping with today's genuinely exciting race, I am officially changing the title of this thread to suit.
