Hello all,

I am a new member and am the proud owner of a Vespa ET2 and GTS 250 ie from The Netherlands.

I see many topics about installing a Malossi air filter in the existing air filter housing.

Now I can't read anywhere which filter is the best to buy. There are 2 variants. 1 single layer (completely red) and 1 double layer (red with black).

It seems most logical to me that the single allows the most air to pass through, but are there any disadvantages to this? Which variant did you buy?

Thanks for your help!

Mark

thanks for your comment. I think that is the standard filter, but I want to buy a Malossi filter because of better air passage.

I'm just unsure which of the 2 types I should choose. Are there any dangers or disadvantages to the single-layer filter? or better for a safe solution and a double layer suit?

If I was going to fit a Malossi air filter I would choose the double layer one as you don't want to much air flow . Is the filter oiled ?
Or stick with a new clean lightly oiled standard air filter .

Okay, I'll bite: if you're set on buying a Malossi filter, get the double. Unless you're racing a highly modified bike and longevity isn't your primary concern.

Use the single foam filter. It does provide more air flow than the stock filter.
The Premium Piaggio stock filter 8319970P is basically a cheap foam filter with some oil on it, and not really worth $8. Dealerships and independent service centers buy the regular Piaggio filter and add a teaspoon full of oil. The Malossi dual foam filter is good if you live in the Sahara and ride during sand storms, but it's overkill. Even if you oil it, the Malossi filter still gives better air flow than the Piaggio filter and it won't decompose and end up going through your motor.

I got the Malossi single layer on my 2015 Sprint 150, it sounds a bit louder and more moto than my GTS 300 at idle and taking off, neither bike is loud though

The biggest issue with OEM filters that I have seen is that they tend to break up and go through the motor. Except for that, they are okay. There was a time when just about every company used a foam filter. Then they went to paper. Now Piaggio is going to paper filters too, albiet slowly and inconsistently.

Thanks for your responses. I never drive on dirt roads, so the single layer could be an option. On the other hand, I also want my Vespa to last a long time. Will a single layer treated with oil be a safe and good option?

I suspect that even the double layer allows more air to pass through than the OEM filter. My feeling is that the OEM filter is much too compact and allows less air to pass through, which is of course a shame for your performance.
