Probably no surprise to anyone after putting 9,000 miles on my 2023 GTS this year, mostly at high speed between cannonball and cannonball training rides I've got a significant amount of scoring on my variator. Performance has declined a bit, possibly as a result. So I figured I'd just go ahead and replace it but Piaggio doesn't have any availability until March on the OEM assembly. So I've been considering going with a Malossi or JCosta.

I've always kept my engine and transmission stock so since it isn't like I can't ride the scoot should I go aftermarket or wait for stock?

Personally I'd wait for OEM.
The variator on my MP3 500 I replaced at ~35,000 miles, and most of that was riding at 65+ if not 70+ MPH. And quite a bit two-up.
It was rather deeply scored, and maybe impacted performance.
Cannonball miles are hard miles, but so are 650+ mile days around the midwest.

If you think you will be riding quite a bit between now and March, you can always put an aftermarket in. If you don't like it, replace it when the OEM is back in stock.

I've spent a lot more on a lot less.

If I put in aftermarket and don't like it I can always order the OEM and switch at next belt change. I will likely need a belt change before the OEM would arrive. That's why I was asking. Looks like there are several aftermarket available from Malosdi, JCosta and a couple different ones from Polloni for the HPE. I've checked and the OEM part number is the same for all the HPE including the 2023.

I've seen Polini rollers that melted on the Cannonball in 2018, and I think one of the Cannonballers had a Polini variator that was installed by a dealership in San Diego fail and take him out of the event. The Malossi variator is so much better built than any of the other conventional variators.
With the JCosta variator, you don't need to change the contra spring. It is designed to be used with the stock setup. It is more maintenance dependent than a conventional variator, but people who use them, love them. I have been impressed with it, but I know that no matter what you do to a Malossi variator, it will take it.
