Ever since... I don't even remember when. I had the stand off the bike for some reason, and when I put it back on I noticed that it doesn't snap back as strongly as it used to. I've looked at photos of the spring and S-clip setup and I think I have it right. I've tried turning the clip the other way, moving it to the other slot in the frame, etc. but it doesn't seem to make a difference. I just remember that before I took it off, it used to snap back and stay tight against the floor. Now if I go over a bump I can hear it banging loosely. Here's a video of how it's working now:

Am I just imagining things or is this wrong?

Did you put it on backwards? Isn't there supposed to be a round piece of rubber in one of the u-shaped brackets to act as a bumper with the underside? Are the mounting brackets snug enough? You might be able to create some friction in the pivot area by tightening them up.

Those are P series boots. If you want to ride with them, loosen the stand nuts and tap the stand forward (there's some play there). Rubber might hit the metal before metal to metal.

And they do bounce a bit on the road. We just don't hear it. Your spring looks fine.

Should be these

Thanks for pointing that out! I think when I replaced them, I couldn't get Rally boots from my supplier here. I see that he has them now for $10, so I think I'll just go ahead and order those. You think the incorrect boots are affecting the action of the stand? Are they heavier than the Rally boots?

I didn't know there was anyone else Rather different ends of the vintage vehicle spectrum, eh? Like if I had a Vespa and a Ferrari, they would both be janky and Italian... Vespa and Porsche really have no overlap in how you approach owning them.

No.
Your issue is metal hitting metal.
Btw make sure you orient the boots so the nubs (red dots in that pic) face up.
There's a left and right boot.

Oh, I think I get it - it's like the incorrect boots are letting the stand retract too far. I've ordered the right ones, we'll see if that helps. Thanks!
