I purchased an old ET4 in brighton last week and rode it back to newquay. Issue was this bike struggles to go above 30.

I watched a couple videos and looked around and decided to try and replace the belt and rollers to see if the issue would resolve.

After looking at the transmission i am confused as to what model it is. It doesnt match the manual or the videos i watched, neither do the holding tools to remove the variator fit as they should, the ring holder not at all.

The variator discs(not sure the term) seem to be worn down and damaged toward the center. Im guessing these parts should be replaced ?

I hope the pictures are good enough to see what im dealing with.
Thanks for taking time out of your days to help, as im a bit lost.

(TLDR): What model variant is the transmission on this old ET4 and is it broken ?
Transmission no cover

Variator (i think?) & the holding tools

Hello, and welcome!

I don't know enough about the insides of an ET4 to say if that's normal. But I wish you well to get it sorted out and running!

Hopefully someone with more experience will see this and chime in...

did you check the carburator?
I had similar issue with this membrane(6), niddle(4) and seat (5) being put together in the wrong way. Check this first, as the clutch you can only clean with sand paper to make it clean of rust.

The membrane itself clould be broken too.

That is what is commonly referred to as a Pre-Leader ET4. This was Piaggio's first four stroke cvt driven motor that was produced in-house. Piaggio sold a bunch of Libertys to the Italian Postal Service with that motor, and quite a few of them are still on the road. Piaggio doesn't sell a lot of parts for it anymore, but there are a lot of OEM parts still available through some of the bigger Italian aftermarket sources, like RMS. You can still get a cylinder kit, intake manifold, gasket kits, variator, clutch, clutch bell, cdi and coil, to name a few. The body stuff is the same as the Leader engine ET4, so trim and switches from all years ET2 and ET4 are pretty interchangeable. The carb on that should be a Dellorto, not a CVK like the modern Leader engines came with.
Make sure that any engine parts you get are for the Pre-leader, because most of that isn't interchangeable with the newer bike.

Just curious -- what engine was in the (second series) Piaggio Sfera?

(I know the first series was 2T).
