I have worked on most of the parts of my MP3 500s and 250s but I have never messed with the instrument cluster or ECU. I am looking to swap out the instrument cluster on one of my 500s but was wondering will the new cluster still show the correct mileage? Where is this info stored? ECU? Somewhere else?

Anyway posting this here since it probably applies to most Piaggio scooters. Thanks in advance for your responses.

The odometer value is stored in the dash on my scoot (i have replaced the ecu so i know it's not there). Pretty sure this applies to all Piaggio scoots.

I searched the Service Manual and all I could find about odometer was a description of where it was, not how it works. I guess you'll end up with a "new" mp3. Maybe you could put +mileage in front of the 00000.0.

Hmmm well I guess I will just have to experiment. If the new cluster shows the correct miles then obviously it is stored somewhere. I am guessing not the ECU since people have changed those and I have not heard reports of mileage being zeroed out.

I will post back once I have tried it in a new thread.

With my car, the odometer was kept in 3 different places - the speedo itself, the ECU and a third place.

If a secondhand replacement speedo is fitted and there are different readings, the odometer would simply display "------".

If a brand new speedo was fitted, it would then copy over the speed from the other two sources to verify.

From a security point of view, manufacturers tend to make this process more complicated to stop people winding back the clocks.

In the UK at least, there are companies who can legally alter the mileage on a speedo, but you have to have a valid reason for doing so.

Thanks. I have read similar responses on cars. That there is a master component that updates the odo and the ECU.
