I've had the code in place to do email verifications for quite some time -- and a number of you even helped me beta-test it.

I've finally put in place a small reminder at the top of the page with a link to the email verification process. This will show up for anyone who has either never verified their email address (which is almost everyone) or anyone that hasn't verified their email address in the last year (which is also almost everyone).

The reason this is so important -- and why I'd like all of you to take a moment to do the verification -- is that a working email address is literally the only valid mechanism for resetting a lost password. With MV being an all-volunteer organization, we don't have a support line you can call, we have no zendesk tickets you can file, and we don't even have an email address that is monitored where you can ask for help. Password resets are entirely automated, and if you lose access to your email address (and forget your password), you have basically lost your MV account.

The verification process is pretty quick, and most people with their email client already fired up should be able to complete the process in well under two minutes.

So just do it. Do it today. You can thank me later, when you forget your password.

You participated in the beta test in June. So you're good for another 8 months or so.

The much more classic scenario is "what if your house burns down?"

It's awful to think about, but that's the disaster that I personally try to keep in mind when I'm thinking about data and backups and stuff.

And that's why I keep a safe deposit box. The contents are my birth certificate, my childhood immunization cards, multiple USB thumb drives, a couple of random hard drives, and a pack of Twinkies.

your safe deposit box sounds infinitely more interesting than mine which only contains a steno book of my enemies and the punishments to be dealt should I meet my demise, 1/6th gill of gin and a post it note that reads on one side: give all the scooter shit to birbs, ask Ian about the tools and burn the rest. on the other side is a printed conversation I had with my cat. it's mostly meows.

I guess you had to be there.

BTW, the generally-accepted legal advice is that you shouldn't put your will in your safe deposit box, because your heirs will need the will in order to get into your safe deposit box. Or something like that. I'm not sure if your post-it note actually qualifies as a last will and testament, but it at least resembles one.

Maybe I already did it but I want to be sure. Remembering whether I did something like this right months ago is not likely.

When you say the top of the page do you mean the home page or any page? What does the link look like.

I'm guessing that I don't see anything obvious I probably already did it but could you please check for me?

Thanks.

When your email needs to be verified, there is a thin banner at the top of every page. It's fairly obvious, you're unlikely to miss it. And it will remain there until you do the verification.

You verified your email successfully in October 2023. So you won't be asked again until this October.
