If you just like to cruise about at 100kmh and not modify the kit, change the packers. Bigger sizes on first is traditional.
5mm + 1.0mm on the base and 1.5mm alone on the head. This will lower the transfers and up the squish to around 1.2mm.
Just did a test closing as above and I'm getting a squish of exactly 1.0mm (without gasket paste). Good enough to button it up, or should I try adding more gaskets to get to 1.2mm?

1.0mm is fine but if you'll be riding slower most of the time 1.2mm would be more appropriate.

Great, I'll do that. Should the extra 0.2mm go at the base or head?

Base. Only one gasket on the head. Less chance of a leak

All closed up now. The tips on my old gauge must've been worn out so it was reading a bit low. With a new gauge the squish was 1.15 so that'll do me.

Just need to wait for Amazon to deliver an expansion plug for the exhaust so I can check for leaks. My original plan of stretching an inner tube over the exhaust stub didn't work as I couldn't manage to get it airtight with a jubilee clip.

yeah i tried that inner tube route. it sucks. if you get close to clamping it down, then the clamp starts cutting the tube and leaking there. the expansion plug is the way to go.

Looking to get the motor back in the frame this weekend. Any tips on the timing? Does 20 degrees sound correct?

Quick reminder of the build:
BGM 177 with 1.2mm squish
60mm bell crank
LML reed valve casing
SI 24/24E
BGM stator (fixed)
Polini box
98 RON fuel
Lowish speed 2-up hilly riding

Go with 18 or 19 BTDC for ignition timing.

that should be a solid performer for your requirements
