Hi all.

I seem to remember a thread on here where someone was restoring a P200, and they used a chemical solution to covert rust on their frame. I've tried searching but I can't find it!

I'm in the UK and rust is the devil over here, but I've not seen that kind of result before.

Any help appreciated

Something like this. Don't know if it's available in the UK, though.

There are many products available(phosphoric acid based) but I think you may be looking for Ospho. Many ppl here use it and get the kind of results you describe, including me. In the UK look here : https://www.u-buy.co.uk/product/1F3AK6Q-ospho-osphog-ospho-metal-treatment-gallon-made-by-ospho

Yeah we have stuff like that.

What I remember was they used it on the whole frame.

I think it was phosphoric acid?

Voodoo, that's the stuff. Ospho.

Thank you very much. It's for a friend with a J50 frame

I used Ospho a lot restoring my P200. I did a lot of sandblasting inside the frame tunnel, but used Ospho to treat the spaces between the seams by turning the scooter on its side and packing the seam with paper towels soaked in Ospho overnight.

Rust Oleum are very good products !

I have used the transparent rust converter as I want to keep a rust (fake) patina. I made the metal rust on purpose, and then converted it to protect it.

Here's my 0.1cent,

I've been working with rust converters , inhibitors and incapsulaters for 30 some years and they all have their place but for what your doing I would wire brush every bit of rust I could reach and use Ospho !

It may take several applications so be patient and take your time.
I just restored a 68 Karmann Ghia and I learned rust incapsulators seem to promote rust as they are sealing in moisture most of the time.
I used Ospho in the tunnel of my P125X a couple years back and it looks great still and I live 400 yards from the beach and it's always parked outside!

VW'sand rust go together like a horse and a bucket. I used naval jelly a lot for pitted areas on the interior of my bust where sandblasting is just too messy. With a few rounds of applying and wire brushing it's possible to get to clean metal.

I use rust converters (which turn the metal black) on things like brake drums and differential cases. I don't like to paint those things but it tidies them up and makes them nicer to handle. It needs to be reapplied every few years.

Why don't you like to paint them?
I've found if you prep the rust well and use a converter like Ospho then paint it lasts a long time. It is meant to be topcoat!

Sorry, this is for stuff I do on a car. I just need those kinds of things to be clean, not pretty.
