I have recently found a 1963 VBB2 in the Karoo part of South Africa. (For the last 30 years (at least), it was sitting out in the open, and still minimum rust.)

Interesting thing is that all the rims are 2.25 x 8" rims, thus wide rims. And I can't find anything anywhere about wide rims for 8" wheels. Obviously the original owner could not find 4 x 8" tires, so he used normal tires. How he could ride around on flat-shaped tires, I don't know.

Could anyone shed some light on these rims?

Pretty sure 2.25 is normal for RIMS.
3.50-8 is normal for TYRES, NOT 4.00-8, as they will rub
