Hi all I'm new here. I've recently moved to Madeira and I'm seriously considering an MP3 as my wife doesn't have a bike license but can obviously ride one on her car license. Also if anyone has ever been to, or seen a picture of Madeira you'll know that 80% of the island is vertical haha so the extra power over a 125 will be better for going 2 up.
I know nothing about these though. I'll be buying used, so is there a mileage on these that you would stay away from? ( I realise there's a lot to do with if servicing, storage, if she's been rode hard etc) is there anything in particular I should be looking for in terms of common issues or telltale signs etc beyond the obvious.
Any help is greatly appreciated.
Cheers.

Hi DarryB
I took a look at Madeira on Google Earth, it is indeed a beautiful though isolated island.

What year MP3 are you planning to get? The advise the forum can give depends a bit on which engine and model year. Do note that Piaggio Dealers will typically not work on Mp3s over 10 years old due to parts scarcity.

The Mp3 is a three-wheeler but it IS for all intents and functions a motorcycle with all the same skill requirements and risks. I would strongly recommend taking a motorcycle class with a professional instructor even if not going for a full license just so you and the wife can learn to handle a motorcycle and ride safe. The bike does require understanding counter-steering, balance, and especially hazard avoidance.

Given the remote isolation, you should know that the Mp3 can be difficult to maintain due to the complexity of the machines. Most folks plan ahead 3 to 6 months for any consumables needed for routine maintenance. If you do not have a reliable mechanic then you must also get the specialized tools and manuals. The rear wheel for example is buried under allot of parts so is a choir to replace while other components have long shipping times. There are a number of forum threads on here about maintenance, parts, etc to read thorough, just search for key-words of the components your worried about.

The CVT transmission of the bike means you will not benefit from engine braking like on a traditional manual transmission motorcycle. Expect that you'll need to become very good at cornering on hills or else burn up brake pads faster than usual trying to keep speed under control.

What you would be getting in an MP3 is the following. A more stable boarding for passengers due to the tilt-lock. A parking brake makes parking on slopes a bit easier, especially for short-stops. The 500cc engine is the best engine if you intend to do allot of 2-up riding on slopes, its not as reliable as a Honda but its good enough when maintained properly. Lots of under-seat storage and cargo space.
