Looks like a steering lock notch that got thoroughly abused.

Ideally, no -- there should not be a hole there. But it looks to me like the factory over-machined it a bit, or the wall tolerance was just a bit too tight.

The first photo is a GTS steering column. The second photo is a vintage steering column, where the slot is actually machined all the way through the outer wall.

It is notoriously difficult to tell (visually) if a Vespa steering column is bent. There are some deliberate factory bends, which makes an eyeball assessment near impossible.

You really have to stick it in a bike and see if it behaves.

Maybe, would be best if you can compare side by side to another one.

Yes mate, that shallow contour is normal as for the lock socket you could build that up with weld then grind back.

I believe you mate, the one I am renovating at the moment and previous were possible I swap out all the monkey metal Nuts, bolts and screws for stainless, for the small cost.

Also ferrous stuff like the forks I take to be blasted and powder coated, again not a big cost and sealed from further corrosion.
Anyway mind you're Knuckles on them stiff bolts Laughing emoticon

I have been using a dremel to clean stuff lol but need to invest in a electric drill and some of those wire brush things..I'm going to buy a fish tank pump and filter to make a parts cleaner 1st as everything is just yucky lol..

That's well cheap buggsy..I assume you're no where near London then lol..
I went on sip and did a shopping list of parts needed and some sip parts wanted and it came to nearly £800 and that's without an exhaust and some new tools to put back together properly..I have already spent nearly £600 on parts and the £480 for the scooter..so this scooter that worth bugger all will cost nearly £2000 ... Facepalm emoticon
So do I persevere or cut my losses and sell..
I'm on long term benefits so money is tight Crying or Very sad emoticon

Wha? emoticon Thought you put the one with the shagged barrel up for sale and was looking at another scoot, either way look at it this way if you sold it in bits or as it stands you'll get a lot less than 480, already paid out 600 I would be looking at what of the 800 shopping list could you get in used stuff off eBay and breakers you still get guarantee, at least that way you would get it finished and if you was to sell it then you would get a lot more than 480 but then less than you have payed out in total its the lesser of the two evils.

My son ended up buying a Honda cbr 125r as lost interest in this one..
Most of the second hand parts for my model are buggered anyway as I've been looking for ages..when I do find parts they are crazy money and normally sold straight away..
I would like to put the scooter back together properly and know that it will last a few more years but replacing parts ain't cheap in UK..
