Hi, I have a 2012 GTS 125 super IE, only 9500 miles but unfortunately the big end went in it this week.
I love the bike and I am thinking of obtaining a second hand engine for it.

A few questions;

How do I know what model of engine to look for? Mine was registered in March 2012, I'm aware a new design of engine was fitted sometime in 2012.

Will the key work with a new engine or will it need reprogramming?

Is it a job that someone with average mechanical skills can do?

Thank you

David

Hi changing the engine is fairly easy job especially with YouTube tutorials..
Any fuel injection 125 engine will fit ..would be best if you can get the key otherwise I believe you can get your one reprogrammed..
They changed the body slightly in 13 otherwise same bike..

Just use your old throttle body, that will remain programmed to your current keys.

Thank you for the prompt replies, I've seen one on eBay which is described as an A678 engine 2007-2012. I presume this will do the job?

A678 sounds like the start of an engine number

Have you looked for the engine number on yours? On my hpe it is stamped into the rear of the transmission

m455m is according to easyparts.com a gts 125 e3 2009-2016. that a678 I'm guessing is not an engine number then ...

So I ordered the engine from eBay, turns out even though its for a 2012 GTS its not the same as the one I have! Mine is different on the right hand side, which is where the dip stick is for the oil. I can't find any similar second hand engine
right side of engine
right side of engine

The one I received looks like this on the right.

So it appears that I have a very rare 125cc engine. Every other engine on eBay looks the same on the right hand side

That's a leader engine mate, the most common and a few on eBay, then they changed I think 2012 or 2014 cant remember what year, also if you're getting off ebay make sure it has a warranty and get it fitted before the eBay money back guarantee runs out😉👍

No the leader engine is the bottom photograph, the common engine and will fit in your frame, the top photograph I take is the old engine, if so was it injection or carburation.

The top engine is a GTS IE engine that superseded the leader, this is why I asked is it injection or carburation, so the cross over must have been 2012 if that's what your scoot is

The case says ECS - Electronic Cooling System - a new engine for the GTS125 starting around 2009.

Thank you so much for the info, its strange all the breakers sell the leader engine as fitting bikes from 2007 to 2012; hence I purchased one.

So what do I do now?

Will the leader engine work in my bike? I seem to have a lot of wiring with no where to plug it in on the leader engine.

Hold out for an exact match to the engine fitted to my bike.

Or would this work? I don't know what year its from, advert says for a 2007 GTS onwards, but oil dipstick is on the right.

You're old engine on the right is pump enclosure were this pump is external both IE.

There's a picture on page 47 showing the ECS casing and the oil dipstick on the right hand side. I'm just going by the photos though, I've no first hand knowledge about the engine types.

It appears the seal went on the oil filter when I was doing 60mph, oil light came on stopped bike straight away, to find oil sprayed all underneath bike. Wheeled 2 miles to a repair shop. left it to be looked at, he changed oil new filter. When engine started knocking noise and very little power.
