An automotive question:
I had a maniac in front of my car last night. He'd just passed 3 of us over the double yellow in a residential area of the city.

Now he is ripped because we are at one of the longest stop lights in this town.
He is close behind a cement truck.
Then he begins to light the rear tires of his Chrysler 300 station wagon. They are smoking, and wailing, his car is fish-tailing....but he is essentially staying in place. Still inches from the truck in front of him.

My question is this:
How does one do this?
I know these Chrysler's have big engines - so he had to be over-riding the rear brakes with the gas pedal, yes? Is this possible in a normal car?

I was sooo hoping he'd ram that cement truck! But alas, he didn't, the light turned and he smoked his tires in a right turn and sped off.

I thought stuff like that was only possible in a dragster set-up. 'Hold the front brakes, spin the tires.'

O.S.
* crazed Ohioans....in the past month I've had 3 drivers angrily rip past me over double yellows in a posted 35....because I dared to drive 35 in the dark

a little brake stand burnout never hurt nobody.

I mean, besides the forward clutches and low drum band, that is.

but to your question, yeah that car has more than enough power to break the tires loose. and you don't have to have race car levels of power to lay some rubber: crappy tires, overinflated or just a slick surface is enough to break 'em loose even with an anemic wheezy 4 banger.

Our Ford F-150 will break the rear tires loose surprisingly easily and unintentionally from a stoplight if you get too heavy on the gas, not from it's super powerful engine, but from how light it is over the rear drive wheels when the box is empty, which it always is.

The same reason it can light up it's rear tires is why it's also so useless on wintery roads if kept in 2 wheel drive.

Adjustable front-rear brake balance? I've seen it done on restomod Mustangs.

And F1 cars, of course.

ftfy...

with newer cars, it's tricky to plumb in a bias or adjustable proportioning valve due to the ABS (well, not due to it, more like do it and still keep functional abs, but I digress). however, if the car sees any track time, a line lock would be an easy way to make it happen...

When I was in highschool I had a 1971 Ford pinto that I swapped a V8 into. That thing would do burnouts for days. 😂 I installed a little mechanism in each of the front brake lines that would cut off flow. It worked as follows:

1) while stopped, apply the brakes hard
2) while applying the brakes, flip a switch on the dash that activated the brake line cutoff valve
3) release the brakes. Rear brakes release, front stay locked since fluid can't flow back to the master cylinder.
4) start your burnout. Car remains in place.
5) when you're ready to go, flip switch on the dash and front brakes release.

Front brakes provide the vast majority of an automobile's braking power.
