Winter is pissing me off.....ok, more depressing than anything else. I drove the Subaru up to Deadwood yesterday for a $2.19 'coffee experience' and this is what I found. I had to actually GO INSIDE the joint and sit at a table like a normal, non-riding, member of the human race. Disgusting, to say the least.

I would call you lucky as you can still get out for a cup of coffee. But winter has just started, I guess. Every 4 -5 years we get that much snow in the Charlotte area and everything shuts down because they don't know how to deal with it. A tough year is when we get two storms like that. But we do get a fair amount of ice which I truly hate.

I'm lucky to have good insurance. My ambulance rides, and there have been quite a few in the past two years, haven't cost me a cent. And, on two of the rides, the EMTs literally saved my life.
I give our ambulance association a donation every year. To me, they are priceless! Now I'm known as a "frequent flyer". Off topic - one time one of the attendants asked me if I had sold a house on a certain street. Turns out she and her husband had bought the house from me. Small world. I hated leaving that house, but the area was going downhill. From what she said, I got out just in time.

Medical insurance generally. When we can afford it and need it the least, generally, it's cheap. As we get older, can afford it less, and need it more it costs too much. I discussed this with one of my brothers who worked in the insurance industry and he agreed. However, he said, when our biggest health insurers were set up it was set up by Doctors, as a co-operative, and they charged plenty when you were young and had some spare money and it got cheaper as you got older.
Then they needed corporate type people to run the place and it turned to custard. They are still the best but we have had to opt out as we can't afford it anymore. Fortunately our poor underfunded public system hasn't completely collapsed - yet!

What's uncanny is just how similar ( it's an exact copy ) the Sym is to the Burgman.
They didn't even bother making any subtle changes. It's a direct copy ! It reminds me of when Kymco copied the Yamaha T Max. |

I tried, I really did. Following in the firm of Señor Backlund, et. al, I posted in the "cheered up" side last night, er, this morning.. As it was after nidnight and we're expecting to get our progeny back at the hospital this morning,, we needed a hotel. The closest was a Hilton, seemed reasonable price-wise..... We arrive, front door locked and had to call the desk. Got let in, told the person at the desk rattling off options we'd take anything. She seemed to take her time getting us set up, but then seemed to really slow down. Apparently she was stuck getting us room keys. Eventually suggested we park our car and she'd have things sorted. We did. She didn't. Apparently it was a new system....
She did apologize weakly, but at nearly 2 a.m. I was more concerned about if I could sleep standing up. Finally, she said she still couldn't get keys, but she'd escort us to our room and have keys in the a.m.apparently needed to get our car back. Arriving at room, we enter, she heads down the hall when my wife notices the bare mattress. So, back to the front desk. I give up and grab a seat, wife joins me while the agent does battle with the computer for another 15 minutes. She did weirdly call over to us to ask our zip code.. ![]() Gonna be a long day today, but at least we'll be home. Edit: Now I'm pissed off that I posted this in the "cheered up" by accident. ![]() |

When she got hers replaced, she went to a shop that claimed to be an "Authorized" iPhone repair shop. But her phone didn't recognize the battery as an authentic Apple part. Its performance quickly degraded. The week before we went in for our replacements it was incredibly bad. I took it when I went to pick up lunch for us (to play Pokémon Go on it for her), and it had been on the charger and was at 100%. Less than 5 minutes later it shut off. When I plugged it into the car charger it was at 0%. On the bright side, we should be receiving our ~$90 checks from Apple from the Battery Throttling Settlement soon. That will offset the cost of the battery swaps. |

The Post Office.
They try to deliver a parcel to me on Friday which requires a signature but I'm out so they leave a card to say they'd try to re-deliver it today. I had Hospital stuff to do this morning so I left them a message which gave them the door numbers of 3 neighbours who are willing to receive it. They didn't read the message and left another card. Arse. especially government entities. nothing like instituting a little extra bureaucracy to remind you that you're "making things better". we're fortunate to have a UPS store about 3 minutes from our house. easy enough to redirect anything there that's signature-required and pick up at our convenience rather than worry about missing them time and time again because for some reason they determine an adult signature required means "stop by at 10:30AM on a weekday, adults don't have day-jobs!" |

UPS-
I have been waiting a week for a delivery and yesterday was supposed to be the day according to all the tracking emails. I received an email that at 2:08 pm my package was delivered and "handed to a person" at my address. (No photo verification like Amazon does). Of course, I was home at the time and no delivery was made. None of my neighbors have reached out and said it was delivered to them by mistake. I've already opened a "missing package claim" with UPS and have contacted the seller, Birkenstock, who will also be following up. |

It's pissing me off that my older brother learned about the death of our uncle via a Facebook post made by another family member.
We knew it was coming, he had a case of terminal cancer, and the oncologists he saw yesterday spoke with him about palliative care. We just didn't expect it to happen so soon. And I'm sure my brother would have appreciated a call, as opposed to stumbling across the information on FB. He was nice enough to call me to let me know so that I didn't find out the way he did. |

Now that I don't have FB or Insta or Xster I wonder if I'll hear about my mother's eventual death. They'll probably do something personal like text me. I live about 1k miles from them, and only make it up there about every other year to visit (pandemics notwithstanding). My brother had called me a couple weeks ago to give me a heads up that Uncle Dave's cancer had come back, and that our cousin (his niece) was going to try to get him in to see the oncology experts at the university hospital where she works. The plan was he would stay with our dad during treatments. On Monday, my cousin posted on FB asking for prayers for him, as he wasn't expected to last much longer. This post didn't bother me, as I know that being on hospice can last anywhere from hours to months. Yesterday afternoon, I had been thinking about Uncle Dave, and thought about checking FB to see if there were any updates, but when I got back to my desk I saw a text from my brother asking me to call him when I'm able and have privacy. At that point I knew Dave had died, and chose to call my brother rather than check FB. During the call he said he wanted me to found out by phone rather than how he did, by a FB post. When the call finished, I got on FB and found a comment from my aunt on my cousin's post stating that Dave had died that morning. It just pisses me off that they couldn't wait until they knew that everyone had been notified. It wasn't an emergency or urgent that the information get out to the public. I do have some sympathy for my aunt's situation. She's married to Dave's twin brother, so it probably hits closer to home to her than it does to me. Same for my cousin - it's her father's twin. They probably have much different thoughts going through their heads than I do. Add to that the fact that I do live so far away, and I rarely saw him. I rarely see most of my extended family much, for that matter. When I visit, I tend to see my brothers, Dad & Step-mom, Mother, and my Mom (former step-mom who raised me), and that's about it. Depending on the time of year, I might see aunts/uncles/cousins, but that's rare. The last time I saw extended family on my mother's side was 2017, when my wife and I went up for a family reunion. (I did visit my grandma in 2022 a few months before she died, and that was the primary reason for the visit since she was 99 years old and had dementia and was generally in poor health, but she was the only extended family member I saw on that trip.) The last time I saw anyone from my father's side was November 2009 at my grandmother's funeral. Ok, now I'm pissed at myself for not visiting that side of the family more often. |
