Idiots.
I feel the same every time I see a beer can or bottle in my front yard.

The only thing slightly good about it is we live in a deposit bottle state so every one tossed is a nickel in our pocket! Just wish New York would join with Oregon and make it 10cents and extend it to all beverage containers!

It's weird living in Michigan. We've had the bottle deposit so long (1978) that I just remember when it passed and the mess that it cleaned up almost immediately. When I was a kid, right after they passed it, we used to go up to the school after football games and pick up cans to take back for dimes because people were still accustomed to just tossing them.

I can't believe it's so few states that actually do this. It looks like only ten (and Guam).

When I was in HS in the Dells, my dad would buy cases of Huber in returnable bottles. He was ok with my brother and me drinking at home. We knew to put the empties back in the case, and we knew to leave at least one for him. We usually had 6-12 in the fridge, and a full case in reserve. Most of the bottles appeared to have gone through the return/refill cycle several times, having almost white bands around the top & bottom from clanking against their case-mates. It was rare to find a pristine bottle in the case.

My alarm app didn't work properly this morning.

Even though I turned up the volume of my phone when I went to bed, the audio part of the alarm did not play, so I slept right through it. I woke up on my own at 6:45am. I have to be at work at 7am.

Yes! Grew up with returnable. Even in college would buy a case of Leinenkugel's (which lasted way too long for a Wisconsin college kid ).

I'm no lawyer, but I think you have a case there. Does your policy state that they won't cover old roofs?

We had serious hail damage a few years ago. I had planned to replace our roof, as it was in poor shape. The hail damaged the roof and siding (aluminum). Our insurance company (Amica) covered everything except the deductible. They paid for four(!) new roofs and new siding on two of my structures, no hassle, not a peep of resistance. They paid over $90,000 in repairs.

There are good companies out there.

Mr F,

Regrettably, you have the wrong policy that depreciates the roof based on its age. You can buy policies that do not depreciate - they cost more. So, roofs are judged to have a 20 year life span. At 20 years, they may still be fine and not leaking. What happens is, the grit on a asphalt shingles wear off naturally over time. You can usually find the worn off grit in your rain gutters.

So, if you have a a hail/wind storm, the insurance company first apples your deductible then depreciates based on what policy you bought.

Good luck out there. The hail is so bad in my home state of Minnesota, that half the Home Insurance Companies have suspended writing any new policies.

Monogodo/Fledermaus,

Same - same. When I grew up, my Dad and my Uncle would drink either Hamms Beer or Grain Belt Beer out of brown bottles that came in a hard sided case. You would simply return the empties in the same case and get a new one.
If you did not have a case to return, you had to pay for the new case.

My job on the front lawn at our lake cabin, was to ferry refills to them. The case was so strong, many times they would pour ice in it. My Dad would joke that this was the purpose of young kids - ferry beers for you.

I would occassionaly sneak a sip - thought it was horrible - give me a Coca Cola.

Nope. No proof needed.

People who had bags of bottles kept them until the new year, so they got the 10¢ even though the bottles had "cost" 5¢.

There is some talk about banning nips, but that will be a tough trip. Each town gets a nickel for each nip sold there, and the amount of money involved is stunning. The nip bottles are also quite a littering problem, despite the deposit fee.

From local news: "The grand total paid to cities and towns between Oct. 1, 2021 and Sept. 30, 2023 is $8,986,536.15." And that's at the 5¢ rate

Not exactly small change Headache emoticon

A nip bottle is a very small bottle with some sort of liquor in it. It's popular with drivers who want/need a nip, (a small amount of booze). Yes, it's drinking while driving, but from the large amount of these bottles on the roadsides, they are quite popular. It's similar, or identical, with the small containers served by airlines.

Burnout is pissing me off today. Well, not pissing me off, exactly... but bumming me out.

I am trying to rewrite the Members section of the website -- the part that allows you to search for a member, and also to see statistics on highest number of posts, earliest members, etc.

And I just don't want to. I have been trying to get going for a couple days now, and I just... can't. I don't like the structure of the code. I don't like the design or layout of the HTML that's already there. I don't like the feature set. I'd like to do it differently, with modern tools and interfaces, but I am too stupid or too lazy to learn what all the cool kids are using these days.

Yeah. This is burnout. I recognize the signs pretty well.

From Google:

"History of Nip Bottle

In Scotland and the USA's northeastern parts, these miniature bottles are often referred to as nips or shooters. Nips originated as tasters during the 1800s; the slang or the term nip originated from the Low German term nipperkin (Taylor, 2019)."

A nip bottle is about 1.5 oz., so equivalent to a shot (I think.)

OK that explains it for me. I do see them along the road at times in front of my house! Just never heard the term before.

Unfortunately at least here in NY there is no deposit on hard liquor bottles or if I recall any non-carbonated drinks.

To be more exact:
New York's Returnable Container Act, more commonly referred to as the "Bottle Bill," requires a deposit of at least 5-cent deposit on carbonated soft drinks, beer and other malt beverages, mineral water, soda water, wine products (wine coolers) and water that doesn't contain sugar containers. Although commonly called the Bottle Bill, the Act includes more than bottles. A deposit is required on glass, metal, and plastic containers that hold less than one gallon or 3.78 liters.

I was exhausted after work yesterday, so I decided to take a 1-hour nap on the couch after dinner. Ended up sleeping for 3 hours. That meant I wasn't tired/sleepy at bed time, and ended up staying up until 3am. I have to get up no later than 6am to be at work by 7am. So today's going to be a rough day.

On the bright side, I think we get Monday off (President's Day), but I'm not positive. I'll know for sure this afternoon if we are sent home early due to a "Dust Storm."

Many states have an "open container law" which prohibits an open container of alcohol in a vehicle. With these little bottles you open it, drink it all, and throw it away, thus no open container with alcohol in it. It goes from sealed closed to empty instantly.

The law was written by lawyers and lawyers found a way around it. 😉
