A VPN with a British server IP address gets around that very handily to access BBC iPlayer.

Oh, yeah, while we were away this last weekend, our water heater took a crap and semi-flooded our house's lower level.

Many pails of sopped up water poured down the bathtub drain, and $2200 for an emergency new water heater purchase and installation later, we're approaching some form of normalcy.

Such is life.

Our spirits were, as they say, 'dampened'.

But on the bright side, although they're predicting 1-3 inches of snow for us starting Wednesday evening, and a substantial dip in temperatures for the next week, tomorrow is predicted to be 64 degrees, so I will be able to take the Triumph up to Deadwood for very welcome mid-autumn coffee break.

Huzzah!
say what???? $2200 for a new water heater installed????? that's insane. your talking $5-600 maybe $800 for the water heater and it should take no more than 1.5 hours AT THE MOST so even at high labor of $100 hr your at the tops $1k ok so add another $200 for shits and giggles.

I thought so too, when I went out for quotes a year and a half ago.
I was preparing my house for sale and the old water heater was just sort of limping along.
Got quotes and was like "aw hell no".
The plumbers that I contacted, three or so of them, all REQUIRED that they install a certain brand that happened to be not only very expensive, but also not available at Home Depot so no price matching.

So I put it in myself for that ~$600 or so you mentioned.

But yeah, have someone else do it and apparently you're not only paying for their time but also their boat, too.

Last post on the subject.

When the Hospital called me back about my "Cancelled" appointment I corrected the Member of Staff by reminding her that it wasn't cancelled. I was on time and I was ignored and that if it happens again I'll leave.

I understand that when it comes to Health Care you often have to wait for a while until your name is called but it's the assumption that you will sit there like a twat for a couple of hours and not kick off that particularly annoys me.

On a lighter note.......

water heaters are really pretty dang simple to replace. doesn't matter if gas or electric either.
lowes offer same day replacements. https://www.lowes.com/l/install/water-heater I think they run about $200

Seems high to me as well. I had a water heater replaced by a company that does nothing but water heater replacements in the very expensive Silicon Valley market. They quoted about $1100, showed up on time, finished in an hour or two, left the space around the water heater tidier than it was when they started, and the the final charge was slightly less than they quoted.

Granted, mine wasn't a flood situation — the tank had started leaking a bit, enough to extinguish the pilot repeatedly, but was still mostly intact.

We made the mistake of buying a water heater and installation through Lowe's and one of their contractors. Never again, far more than $200, and the final was over $2000 for a top end water heater that was about $800. We had no hot water, limited time as we didn't live full time in that house, and no known plumber to use so we just did it very unhappily. It isn't a hard job, but there could be additional pipe work needed. In our case we needed a new valve as well. This was during Covid so that didn't help.

I had to argue with the estimator on what would fit when he came to the house as he couldn't grasp the odd shape water pan and diameter of the water heater at that point in the pan. He was stuck on the short end that was less than the diameter of the water heater.

Anyway, as always on these things, YMMV.

Today I chose my Xmax to ride to work.

It was low on fuel so I stopped at the neighborhood gas station, where I had filled up my truck last Saturday for $2.949/gal.

I didn't even look at the prices and hit the regular fuel button, then started to fill up.

I then looked at the pump and the fuel was costing $3.989!

After I finished, luckily using less than three gallons, I noticed that the mid grade and premium were less expensive.

Certainly strange and unexpected.

Luckily my inattention only cost me three dollars at the most.

25 miles from me is a Shell Station on a major highway that was charging £1.97 per litre for V - Power a few weeks back.

4.5 Litres in an Imperial Gallon so that's £8.86 or $11.07 Thank you.

But only 3.78 liters in a US gallon so that's £7.44 or $9.29.

Speaking of gasoline station 'fun', here's a 20 second video I shot last weekend of an Oklahoma (US 'Bible Belt') gas station force-feeding me a church commercial while being held hostage pumping some 89 octane dinosaur juice into the Subaru.

Lots of ambient racket going on here, so the volume has to be turned up if you want to hear 'The Message'...

WLeuthold isn't in Porto, he's in the US, hence the relevance of the US Gallon. Which, interestingly enough, is derived from the Queen Anne wine gallon.

I don't have a car in Porto, and if I did it wouldn't be taking liters or gallons, but kilowatts.

We have cats addicted to a reasonably generic treat. My wife brought home some fancier ones, which for some reason they have little interest in....guessing if you put them in the litter box they'd bury them. Probably weren't all that expensive, but not we're sitting on a jug of "treats" that nobody wants.

OTOH, I bet my chickens will get excited.....they seem enthusiastic about anything that makes it over the fence.

JBlacklund,

My gas utility company offers the service of replacing your water heater for $800. They take away the old heater and even put the $800 on your next monthly bill that you can pay over 10 months. Pretty slick. My kids are grown up and gone - so I do not need the expensive huge capacity water heater.

Bill,

Regular more expensive that premium - crazy! Something silly going on there.
Fuel seems to have always been more expensive in Europe/UK. I am not sure, but I think their high cost has something to do with heavy taxes.

Dog,

I think you have universal health care in the UK. It seems when the government is involved it will be "slow to go" and long waits.

Having said that, over here it is pricey. Even with good insurance, the deductibles and out of pocket expenses are high. My wife and I had a couple of health issues this year - had to pay +$6000. So waiting in line in the UK may not be that bad.

That is $6,000 plus your monthly payment.

You are probably on Medicare so that is now only a few hundred dollars.

Before Medicare my wife and I were paying as much as $3,000 per month for health insurance.

Owning your business has its downside.

I run Gabriella on 100RON at NZ$2.996/litre = NZ$11.32/US gallon = US$6.82 according to XE right now.
My Giulietta runs on 95RON at NZ$2.826/litre = NZ$10.68/US gallon = US$6.43 again according to XE
Nearest 91RON is NZ$2.666 from the same station as above, =NZ$10.08/US gallon = US$6.07.

44% of new BSA Goldstar owners have had to return their bikes to the dealer for warranty repairs.

The issue is that there aren't any spares to repair the bikes with.

Don't buy a BSA Goldstar.
