When two workshop manuals say the torque is 42nm and you break three bolts trying to achieve 42nm. Yet the more powerful big brother version of what you're working on has a spec of 16nm for the same part.

I can't remember the exact wording on the factory manual for Vespa, but it was so crass, I couldn't not love it.
Basically it said if you need this to do basic repairs you shouldn't be using it.

What size are the bolts? I'd assume at least 3/8" Grade 8 for 30-35 lb-ft.

In the picture 1987 through 1989 is in lbs and just below that the torque spec for 1990 and 1991 and then below that 1992 on are both ft lbs

Hayes is the hard copy. A Honda workshop manual from online AND a few folks on the 2 stroke forums.

I get it, the industry under the guise of the environment have been trying to keep a closed hood policy for years and years.
I can tell by the hardware and its use what the given torque value is.
It's like looking at a type of screw driver and knowing where it goes.

I'm really interested in where the (1) goes.

And its lb-in or lb-ft, or even better lbf-ft not ft-lb. The force come first...

Bolt was a 6x19. I snapped two from an aftermarket kit and one new Honda OEM. I do not have info on the bolt grade

In the states it is commonly referred to as "foot pounds" or "inch pounds" when speaking. I have never heard anybody say it the other way around.

Not only that it is printed in the manual with the "force" last. I read "ft-lbs" as "foot pounds" not pounds foot but then I drive on the right side of the road too!

Google agrees with you Jim but I have never heard it said that way.

no way , if kept open and unspent they will take years in costs and manpower to keep tracking it so that .01 cent will end up costing them hundreds of $$$. kinda funny IMO.
