I was car shopping last week in the big city. As soon as they found out I was from out of town and wouldn't be bringing it back for servicing they became quite disinterested in selling it to me. A three year warranty on a used car in exchange for exorbitant compulsory services? No thanks.

I actually spent about 1.5-2 hours at a dealership when I got my Jetta TDI, and ended up walking away after a *LOT* of work on their end because they insisted on SUPERGLUING a dealer emblem on the back of the car. I told them not only no, but hell no, even a license plate frame would be chucked immediately.

They said it was mandatory for the 'great deal' they were giving me. I said cool, got up and walked out. Started getting calls *THAT DAY* about "when will you be coming to pick up your car?" (i hadn't signed anything) which after a couple days turned to "you reallly need to come get your property off our lot" and then "we're going to notify the police and have your car towed" ROFL emoticon

Hubris is always a root cause of downfall.

I had a similar, if not as extensive, experience at a Chevy dealer some decades ago. I was looking for a base model pickup. I didn't take a test drive, just wanted to know what one would cost me should I buy. Salesman took my info, and we talked price. I went home to sleep on it, and next day got the call "The truck is ready for you to pick up, come get it." WTF? I never signed anything, nor had I selected any particular truck. They hounded me a few times more, then gave up. Guess they figure that since I was young, they could intimidate me. Wrong!

Mrs Syd and I were looking to replace our suv some years ago. We took a ride in an available model, went inside and asked "how much"?
Dude hums and hahs about trade ins and such, we asked again "how much"? Repeat two maybe three times, dude says he'll check with his mgr. Five minutes later, with nothing, not even a look in our direction, we leave, never to return.

[EDIT] our car is not edible, so suv not sub

Some years ago, Mrs. mpfrank told me that I had to buy a car for our daughter to drive herself and her sister to school. So off I went looking for a good used car.

I found a Toyota Corolla at the local Toyota dealer that was advertised for $12,000. The thing was, the Kelly Blue Book retail price for this car was only $8,000.

So, I sit down with the salesman and say that I would like to buy this car for $8,000. He counters with $10,000. I repeat, $8,000. He says he would be happy to give us that price but he needs to consult with his manager.

He comes back and says the manager won't sell it for that price. "You've got to get me something!"

"OK," I say, "Eight thousand dollars and ninety-nine cents."

More time with the manager.

I got the car for $8,000.

Well, mildly irked here....decided that before I let myself get bored with retirement, we've ignored the kitchen a bit and updating our appliances before they quit on us would be a good idea....and with an uncertain economy staring us down, even more incentive. Headed off to our favorite appliance dealer and bought fancy (hardly) new fridge, range and dishwasher. Set up delivery for next week (they couldn't come sooner). All fine, until last night when something popped in the over while warming up for pizza, and we're mostly out an oven. Crap.

And when it rains, it pours....cleaning up after dinner, the water never got hot. With luck, it might just be the pilot light (happened last year) or, well, time for a new water heater. Woot!

Get a tankless water heater. Pilot lights chew up way more gas than you'd think.

Yeah, going to ask about that. I got the pilot lit, but it's flashing a warning code, so even if it's working I need to be proactive. Plus it's roughly 10 years old....

Really? Must depend on your water quality I guess. Much easier to DIY descale though, *if* that is deemed necessary.

You not find any new appliances with pilot lights in the UK - and probably not elsewhere in Europe. Apparently pilot lights account for roughly half the natural gas usage in the average domestic heating appliance.

Wow, that's a lot of waste!

I got this from Home Depot's site: "If you've replaced your water heater within the past few years, you may have been surprised to learn that your new unit doesn't use a traditional standing pilot light. As with furnaces, most new gas water heaters no longer use pilot lights for ignition and instead typically use some type of electronic igniter.Dec 20, 2022"

Jus' sayin' - food for thought.

I spoke with my plumber, who actually helped me tweak my controls and at least for now I have hot water. The clock is ticking though. His comment on on-demand heaters is that they're sensitive to iron in the water and suggested I might need an iron remover in addition to the unit. Not sure he's giving me the right info, but their shop has been pretty good to me over the years and I tend to trust them.

Anyway, on to the latest gripe. Made hotel reservations for a few weeks out to rendezvous with my sister and BIL. I prefer to reserve directly...I was looking online and was a bit confused about cancellability of reservations (if there's a snowstorm they're not coming), so called directly. Had to deal with giving basic information to a robot before getting a real person. That went well, though it got tedious when he insisted on giving me the hotel's amenities. Then went on to get me signed up for the rewards program...okay, why not? Then the offer of a credit card...no thanks, then offered 500 rewards points if I'd listen to a sales pitch of travel offers. Yeah, okay, why not? I was hoping for a recording that I could mostly ignore, but no, I got a guy who wasn't very good at what he was doing (I gave him three tries to get my name spelled properly before finally letting him spell it wrong). After fumbling through preliminaries that was just grinding through my time, I told him this wasn't working for me and hung up.

I rather expect that when I call for reservations, that's what I get. I know, I can say no to all the other BS, but I'm not fond of the pressure. That alone is enough to make me want to deal with another company in the future.

Asshats on the road.

It's winter again. We should be pretty good at it by now. I cleared 8" of show off the driveway and walks this morning. I opted to take the FIAT because it's ok in the snow and I am a good driver.

It's 2º with a -15º windchill, so the roads are snow packed and a bit slippery. There are five stoplights between me and work. As I'm approaching light #2 traveling at just below 40mph in a 45 zone, I can see the countdown clock almost at zero for the crosswalk so I know the light is about to change. I let my foot off the accelerator to begin slowing and the guy in the Suburban behind me flashes his lights because I didn't run the light. Then I see his whole vehicle kick sideways behind me as he stops because HE CAN'T CONTROL HIS FREAKING TRUCK.

When the light turns green I roll slowly forward to gain traction and notice that I very quickly put at least ten car lengths between us. BECAUSE HE CAN'T GET HIS TRUCK MOVING AT THE INTERSECTION.

Despite this, he almost catches up to me and pulls into the left lane to go around, but there isn't room before the next intersection, where I am turning right. Oh, where he also is apparently turning right. So, pulling back behind me, he follows me around the corner. Where, again, there is a very marked distance between us BECAUSE HE CAN'T CONTROL HIS FREAKING TRUCK.

Look, I get that all cars are varying levels of suck in the snow. But drive them according to their level of suck, because you aren't just driving for you, you are driving for everyone else. People die on the roads in this weather, especially when people are careless.

That's my rant for today. Everyone be careful out there.

Health Insurance is pissing me off. Specifically, my prescription coverage (tl; dr: at end).

Because I work for a school district, our insurance coverage runs from September 1 through August 31. The first time I went to fill my ADHD meds, they came up as close to $300. When I asked the pharmacist, they looked into it and said I had a deductible to meet first. Because I need them to function at work, I paid it with my Flex Spending card. I had meds to pick up at another pharmacy that same day, and when I got there, one was $0, the other was ~$12. So I figured I must have met the deductible with that first Rx. The next couple of months the cost was around $100, so I paid and went on with my life. Then it was on back order for two months, so I had to go without.

On January 2 I called and they had it in stock, so I contacted my doctor to have a refill called in. Due to the snow event that hit the following week, the refill was delayed in being called in, and the pharmacy was out by the time they got it. So I called around and found a pharmacy that had it and arranged for the refill there. When I went to pick it up, it was about $250. When I asked about that, they said that I hadn't met my deductible yet. I thought I had, so I asked them to hold it while I called my insurance and that I'd be back later in the week.

When I called the insurance provider, I reached an automated system. The only options it asked for were refills, new prescription, or something else. When I said "something else" it asked if I wanted refills, new prescriptions, or something else. I asked it for an Agent. It responded, "to help the agent better serve you, are you wanting refills, or new prescriptions?" I then almost shouted at it, "GET ME A LIVE PERSON!" I was then transferred to a live person.

After explaining why I was calling, she explained that I had a "shared deductible" with my health insurance, and I had only paid about 1/3 of it. I asked why the previous refills had been much cheaper, and she said she had no record in her system of those refills, so the pharmacy must have been using a coupon. I happened to be at a different pharmacy picking up two other prescriptions, and asked her why one of them was $0, and the other was >$12, if I hadn't met my deductible. She explained that the $0 one was covered under preventative meds, and the other had a lower pre-deductible cost than the ADHD med. She told me what the cost of the ADHD med would be if I were to meet my deductible, and it was still close to $100/month.

I apologized to her for being upset when I got on the line, and explained that part of that was due to the automated system pissing me off. She sighed and said that it has to hear incorrect answers three times before it will transfer to a live person. I said that is stupid, because then the customers are pissed off by the time they reach a live person, and it makes that person's job that much more difficult. She agreed.

She was very helpful, though. She did give me pricing on alternative meds. I'll go over the options with my doctor when I see him next month. What also sucks is that RedBull Zero Sugar works better than the med I was prescribed, and it doesn't give me dry mouth. And based on the cost, it's cheaper for me to drink one 12-oz RedBull Zero Sugar every weekday morning than it is to fill the monthly prescription ($80 for the RedBull vs $100 for the Rx).

tl;dr: I have craptacular prescription coverage, and the phone system is stupid.

Those long, single springs are nothing to fool with. Wise of you to delegate it to the pros.

Some years ago my detached garage door had the double spring setup. One evening I heard this loud thump, and went looking for whatever caused it. Not finding anything, I resumed watching the TV. (It was loud enough to be heard over the TV.)
I found the cause the next day - one of the springs had broken and slapped the 2x4s that framed the opening. I knew that was it, because the indentation of the spring was plain to see in the wood. Imagine if someone was standing there!

I replaced both springs myself (easy if you know how) and put the safety kit in, which consisted of a cable that ran inside each spring, so if/when the spring broke, it would be contained and not fly loose.

Nowadays, it's code to have the cables installed.

That sounds like a different sort of spring (and safety cable) - AFAIK there's no such product for the springs shown above. If they break, the spring is still fully contained on the bar - again as shown above.

Different indeed. There is one spring for each side of the door. They are stretched linearly. (think rubber band). If one snaps without the internal cables, it can act like a rubber band and whip around, or go flying off, creating a very real safety hazard. The good news is that it is easy to relieve the tension on them, making for a safe and easy replacement.

Best to have both replaced even if only one broke. You were blessed not to have to make that decision....Those too make an explosion sound when they break.

Our cable broke last spring. (pun intended). It sprung so hard it moved trusses.
Those torsion springs are definitely a safety improvement.

They are, but even those springs have the capacity to kill someone if they don't know what they're doing. Fortunately, though, they are unlikely to kill an unwitting bystander.

I have the springs on my two separate garage doors that run along the side like Seamus' above. They do make a helluva racket when they break. I was in the garage once when it happened and it sounded like a rifle shot at close range. Scared the bejesus out of me. The cable contained the spring, so all was good. The advantage of this type of set up is that you can easily repair it yourself as the parts are readily available. Also, when you inspect the springs occasionally, you can usually see if there is a weak spot and plan ahead to change them out before they break. If and when the doors ever get replaced, I plan on going with the wall mount or jack shaft system. Seem like a better way to go.

In contrast I had my annual mechanical check on the Hyundai i10 a few days ago at my local franchised dealership.

During the inspection the Tech noted that the adjuster for the clutch was around halfway and so it was recommended that I had the clutch replaced, at 40,000 miles.

Stop it please.

Here's one. Our entire area received letters in the mail that our electric bills will be INCREASING by 72% starting March 1st. That's absolutely insane. 72%!!!!

I have to get to work looking for other carriers. At first blush the cheapest I can get will still come at a significant increase AND your giving another entity all your information.

That is pissing off a hell of a lot of people not just me!!!🤬

The garage door fixer guy is here, so that's cheering me up, but I won't have the bill until he's done, so I may have to take this over to the 'What's Pissing You Off Today?' topic later on.

I'm hoping it's no more than $300-$500, but who knows these days. If they charge like Indian/Polaris or Harley-Davidson for their service and parts, I'll probably have to sell the F-150, Rocket 3R, Vespa, and then remortgage the house to pay for it, not to mention putting the cats on a no-frills diet of those seventeen dollar, thirty pound bags of Fleet Farm dry cat food instead of the 7 ounce packages of freeze-dried, fresh-killed, songbirds and organic, free-range baby dolphins that they're accustomed to.

I think your right on the price range. I bought a new tension rod, spring and center bearing for $116, and that was jobber cost. The last time I had someone do it, the rod wasn't wrecked and it was $350 for a single spring replacement.

Not a lot to see, but it now works as well as it ever has.

The fixer guy really knows his garage doors, and in fact, thinks that he and his partner may have installed this door back in 2005 when the house was built.

Amazing and knowledgeable garage door fixer guy diddling with the door, and the newly functional fixed door, with the garage door guy's service truck in the driveway, about to leave.

The 'damage' will not exceed $300 according to him, and they will bill us. Maybe they know it's my birthday today and gave me a good deal?

Nah......but it's a lot less than it could have been anyway.

So now I'm all cheered up...and in the wrong thread as a result of that.

Jacksonville Florida has been under a winter storm warning for most of the week.

What is pissing me off is that I washed all of my scooters, finishing up on Saturday, then put them into the garage.

Haven't ridden them since.

I can't remember a week of not riding a scooter, while at home, for more than twenty years.

I have been driving my Miata instead.

It looks like it will be warmer and clear next week.

Can't wait to get out again.
