I saw them open for Love in Rockets right before Nothing's Shocking was released... 87 or 88 at a club called Numbers in Houston. Incredible.
I saw them again in 88 or 89 headline the same club after NS was released. Even more incredible. Over the years I caught them a few more times. Most of the shows forgettable, with a brief Hollywood Bowl show being the exception circa 2000/2001 I also saw them a few months ago, before the break up with Love and Rockets opening for them. I was hoping it would be an appropriate bookend... Instead Perry was already out of his head. Sound kinda sucked and his voice just wasn't there. "Erratic" would be an understatement in regards to his behavior. I was not at all surprised they imploded due to his shenanigans. Sad ending to a band that genuinely found a sound that was so unique and yet accessible.

skids Your latest contributions made me think about a time in the late 80's where I was 15 and hanging out with 20 y/old people. I learned on the fly. The music was amazing. The Cure. Siouxxie. The Clash. Devo. Sinead had just dropped her debut that was wonderful. Mix that with Fleetwood Mac and a bit of The Eagles, and you get a wonderful soup of ideas and musical talent. Patti Smith? You are a true one.
Here is one of my favorites from this band. On a side note, I really enjoy The Cure's first album. I learned to play bass on it.

At this stage of my encryption, I use music genres like a Time Machine. It's like knowing the difference between an Original Triumph T-100 and a modern version. I just love hearing the tappets and horns, versus a clean air pump. Why I sought out modernvespa was smelling some sweet castor bean mix yesterday.

this is a great Denver band. they sell out Red Rocks multiple times a year. I heard this song on a radio station in Boulder, CO, while Mrs Syd and a mutual friend opened a frozen yogurt shop there. Big Head, Richard Thompson, Taj Mahal and some others were played on that station. then it went away. Tood bad.

I'll save the vintage music for my deathbed on a drip, watching poppies on the tele. Until then I'll love fast food music like the following, cheers gents.

A friend of mine was the CFO of GIANT Records when the label signed the band. I went to several showcases, and I was invited to the launch party for SISTER SWEETLY at the Rainbow in L.A. when the elpee came out. They are a SMOKIN' outfit and should be LOTS bigger than they are. Victor

I have probably posted this song before. Growing up listening to this band made me appreciate timing, and how hard it is to keep a tight beat for 4-5 minutes. It's incredibly hard. Not hard like being trapped under an ice sheet gasping for breath, but hard nonetheless. This song was an endurance test and still is to this day. I always play a strat(Korean knock off) while playing the very beginning til the end. I have proudly worn bloody fingers afterwards.

Love "Blondie". I am always one for a story, and her it goes. Debbie and a few of the band crashed in a NYC apt that was shitty, of course. Debbie said they had so many roaches that she laid down baby powder around the bed to see the course. As you can imagine, the scene was not comforting in the morning. Sometimes we don't need to know. I digress..... |

My roommate had this album in college years, and I liked it. Consequently I spent decades looking for this album, in the various formats of the day, until I recently I found it. Yay! I then brought the CD home, ripped it, as I do, then listened. Turns out I don't care for it any more. Even better, I happened to buy a three CD set of Ace . yay me.

"How Long" by Ace...man, that tune WAS my junior year in college! Chart-wise, it rose to #20 in the U.K. while climbing to #3 in both the U.S. and Canadian charts.
Written by keyboardist/singer Paul Carrack, it is commonly thought the song was about infidelity...and in a way, it was. Turns out, Ace's bassist, Tom Comer, was "moonlighting" with The Sutherland Brothers & Quiver, which rightly pissed off Carrack. (An aside: The Sutherland Brothers & Quiver originally wrote and recorded the song "Sailing," which became a massive FM radio hit in the U.S. for Rod Stewart.) Carrack went on to sing for/play with/support such folks as Nick Lowe, Roxy Music (on their elpee MANIFESTO), Mike + The Mechanics, and Squeeze. With Squeeze, he's perhaps best known for singing "Tempted (by the Fruit of Another)" from their EAST SIDE STORY elpee. With that voice, it's no wonder Carrack has had quite a nice music career. And he ain't no slouch at keyboards, either! Though it has not stood the test of time for you, Syd, I'd still have to say, "Good call!" Victor |
